A former member of House of Representatives who represented Ife Federal Constituency in the 7th Assembly, Hon Rotimi Makinde has called for more proacive steps to curb the scourge of oil theft, Illegal refinery and illegal depots in the country.

According to the ex-lawmaker who once worked as a staff of NNPC in a press statement made available to the media titled ”Nigeria we hail thee” said

”Not many Nigerians are aware that the country is proliferated with more than 1000 illegal petroleum refineries, only the official refineries in Port- Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna are known to the law and the Nigerian populace. So also exists are many illegal petroleum depots nationwide, sadly these illegal activities are impeding economic growth and development in the country.”

The statement continues, ”It is also an act of irresponsibility for any government to admit that they can not protect their pipelines or curtail oil theft, it is very sad to see us as a nation making provisions for crude and finished product stealings in our national budget.”

The way forward is for us to be more patriotic and to see protection of NNPC properties as our collective responsibilities, the States and its people must be directly involved. No known economic policy can triumph in an unsecured environment. The statement concluded.
