Pretend that Glassdoor isn’t a job board / review site for a second.  I want talk about their own HR Team’s efforts to attract top talent to their site.

Just a normal day

A few weeks ago I was surfing the internet and came across Glassdoor’s Robots.txt page.  This page tells robots (like Google’s web crawler, Bing’s web crawler, etc) where they can find certain information within the website, so that they can index it for their search engines.  Basically, this page is not for humans.

Why was I on this page?  I have no idea.  Maybe it’s because Glassdoor is really good at SEO and I was trying to learn from them.

Capturing candidates

What struck me was that before all the stuff the robot is supposed to read, there is a message for humans.  You can read it here but essentially what is says is that if you’re a human being and got here for some reason, we should talk.  You’re probably into SEO, probably curious, and we want people like you, so shoot us a note.  It’s a pretty cool easter egg if you ask me.

Other ideas

It got us thinking a bit about other ways that you could capture potential candidates in this way.  One is to bury comments in your code repos on Github, or comment something in the Javascript that is easily accessible by front end devs who are using inspect elements to check out your code.
