Nice - Som Sanook for authentic Thai food

Finally

At last we have some decent Thai food in Nice! And as it doesn't rain it pours, we have multiple places! I will start with one - Som Sanook and write up BanThai soon as well :)

So let's start with Som Sanook as mentioned, an authentic Thai / Laotian place which as my husband always says, sells Beer Lao which makes him happy! We have been a few times and brought discerning friends and enjoyed all our visits so far. We have also ordered it in via Deliveroo so we can confirm it is yummy and worth the visit, especially as you can ask them to amp up the spice when you are at the restaurant! That is a general tip at Asian restaurants in France, make sure you tell them you like it very spicy, we always add that we are English so they believe us :)

One of my favourite things they have is their chicken larb. LOVE LOVE LOVE larb. Especially when they add more chilli and it is nice and lime-flavoured plus it has a good kaffir lime life hits through it. Well worth ordering!

These noodles were yummmmmmm. Love noodles :) Thai noodles especially. These are the Pad See Ew with chicken that are wonderfully cooked. Nice chew on the noddles with moist chicken. Nom.

Hubby took another of our classic favourites, Pad Krapao, he did it with pork.Nicely cooked egg. More of the "darker" type of Krapao rather than the fresher type (which I personally prefer), but not bad.

Next visit - group of 6 friends

Next time we went was a Saturday night and it was packed so I was happy I had booked! They are often quite busy so you are taking a chance if you just walk in.

We started with some nems (spring rolls) - both veggies ones:

And chicken spring rolls. The chicken ones were very nice, I was less convinced by the veggie ones, a little dry. So I would recommend the chicken ones if you are unsure.

Chicken satay - fine but not overly memorable. But good enough.

Beef brochettes.

And my usual favourite - chicken larb :D

Papaya salad - som tam. My friend C's fav. It has dried shrimp in it so I didn't try it but the others seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Yummy sauce to go with the Thai BBQ / grill. It was citrussy and spicy :)

We got various platters to cook on our grills in the middle of our tables. This is the veggie platter with tofu and courgettes and mushrooms and I think some kind of turnip?

And the non veggie ones, beef and seafood.

I never quite figured out if this is for cleaning your hands or some kind of soup or sauce! You get rice though, I know what that is :)

More yummy dips including a gingery one and fresh ones and yumminess.

We also fancied some curry so we got a pranang chicken:

And a green curry. Both perfectly tasty. I could have taken a touch more spice but the flavour was very good.

Check out the herbs and the kaffir lime leaf :) love love love it in everything!

Having a go on the grill. Tofu isn't the easiest to keep intact on these grills though!

And they kindly gave us some pandan agar agar jelly kind of desserts. Love pandan too!

Another day another visit and this time we tried the pad thai and it is really tasty! Hubby was sweet enough to get a chicken one so I could try it too.

And I had the chicken pad krapao, like I said earlier on, nice but not fully the type I like as I like a fresher version and the different type of thai basil. But it was good, it was!

Hubby ladling on the chili :)

And of course the larb gai, always the larb gai.

We also got a side of veggies. Nice but not memorable, not quite enough oyster sauce in my opinion. But still nice to have some veggies to complement the meal.

All in all, we like the food at Som Sanook and keep going back for more. Check them out!
