Tips for exams where you don't have any negative marking for wrong answers.

The above types of entrance / competitive exams are easiest to write / attempt but are most difficult to get through just because of the fact that almost all the examinees do well and hence the competition becomes so tough that many fail to make it due to fraction of a mark. As it is there in all such exams, the number of questions is lot more than the number of minutes allotted to attempt those questions. For example you may have to solve 160-175 questions in 120 minutes. Even if we take one minute per question you can solve only 120 out of the total questions. And since there is no negative marking, it makes sense to attempt all the questions in the given time.

Making an intelligent strategy in such kinds of exams can give you an edge over others. Generally there are four sections in these exams namely Test of reasoning, Quantitative aptitude, General awareness / general knowledge / current affairs, and test of English.

The strategy that I am going to mention here is not absolute one. You may take it as a clue and make your own strategy.

Since the number of questions are lot more than the number of minutes allotted to attempt those questions, gaining time by attempting those questions first that are easy and require less time. Section wise, it is advisable to start off with General awareness / general knowledge / current affairs section first because you just have to read and answer the questions in this section. You don't need to solve them. Hence you can gain considerable time by starting off with this section. You can complete lets say 50 questions in 20-25 minutes, thereby gaining 20-25 minutes for other sections. Start off answering those questions that you know the answers for and that are shorter to read and understand. Mark those you have not attempted and when you finish answering those questions that you are sure off, come back to answer the questions that you have left out. Read the questions and answer choices carefully. If you can eliminate 2 out of 4 choices, then you have to decide among the other two choices and your probability of choosing the right answer increases.

Then go to the English section. Since the questions in this section are of very basic nature, you can finish this section as quickly as possible and gaining time for the other two sections. First finish off the shorter ones like fill in the blanks, choose the right word, synonyms and antonyms etc. Then attempt the bigger ones like reading comprehension. A little knowledge of basic English grammar and an above average reading speed can help you finish 50 questions in 20-25 minutes.

Then go to the Quantitative aptitude section. Again the questions in this section tests your basic mathematics skills. Hence attempt those questions first that are short and can be solved easily with minimal paper calculations. Then go to the more complex ones. Present exams stress a lot on data interpretation. Hence practice more on such questions by getting hold of a good Quantitative aptitude book. This is a very time consuming section and people get stuck in this section for more time. Hence it is advisable to keep an eye on your watch and trying to finish this section quickly. In the end if you are left out with any time, you can go back to any section to answer the un-answered questions.

Lastly, it is preferable to attempt the Reasoning section since questions in this sections are little tricky. Hence doing well in this section can decide your overall result. Get hold of a good book on reasoning. Practice, practice and practice. First practice on the type of questions that you are comfortable with and then give more time and attentions to the type that you find difficult to solve. Try to do your best in this section by intelligently answering the easy and short questions first and the difficult and long questions later.

Again, since there is no negative marking for wrong answers, try to attempt all the questions in the given time by making intelligent guesses. I hope this article will help all the aspiring candidates of competitive exams. Do
let me know if this article was helpful to you, and if you have any specific question in this regard, please mail me your query.
