Edinburgh Festival - Kika's Birthday

Sophie is turning 16 and as her family tradition, goes her mum is baking her a cake.
The leading lady (Danyah Miller) asks the audience for help as she adds the ingredients and bakes it in front of us. As she does this she is taken back to Sophie’s past birthdays and shares a beautiful, little Story she told her Daughter – the story of Kika the mouse and her micey friends who had a Birthday party.
As we entered, Danyah already started to engage with her audience and my daughter was taken. She listened to what she had to say and reacted with sincere joy as my daughter babbled on (she has a slight speech delay.) This is a sign of a good story-teller who can keep even the most spirited of children entertained.
It was not just my wild child getting involved- all the children were shouting out and were hooked.
Kika’s birthday started and continued its charm through out, with the lighting and music adding to the magic that captivated my daughter from start to finish.
The use of everyday items to transform into the animals in the story was creative and the way Danyah used the space, brilliant.
This play was missing dramatics but this was a gentle story that even the most sensitive children would be happy to sit and watch plus the added bonus that cake is offered at the end.
Overall Kika’s birthday was a win and my daughter said she can’t wait for Kika to turn 6!
Kika’s Birthday can be found at The Pleasance Courtyard (beside) V33 at 11.30am daily from 1st – 13th August (not the 8th)
The Pleasance courtyard also has a range of children’s activities, food and drinks available (prices vary)
