My Book- Character Development (3)

For anyone new to this mini series, I’m writing a book! I can’t give away a tonne, but it’s going to be a YA contemporary. My main Character is Luna Nightingale, and through these blog posts, you can learn more about her! Some of these things will not be mentioned in the book whatsoever, but developing her this way helps me figure out who I want her to be, and how to give her more dimension.

My other two posts so far…

My Book! Character Development!(1)

My Book- Character Development (2)

Here’s more, on Luna Nightingale!

Personality

  1. What words or phrases do they overuse? “Are you serious”… She uses it in a snappy tone with attitude, along with “you’re kidding,” but she also is just very questioning.
  2. Do they have a catchphrase? No
  3. Are they more optimistic or pessimistic? It depends on the situation, but most things, she’s pessimistic.
  4. Are they introverted or extroverted? Introverted. Very, very, introverted, and I think I put that part of myself into her. She keeps to herself for the most part, which makes switching schools daunting.
  5. Do they ever put on airs? I had to look up what this meant.. “an impression of a quality or manner given by someone or something.” The main example I could find on this was acting like you’re better than you are, and if that’s the case, no, Luna is not like that. She’s very insecure and at times it shows.
  6. What bad habits do they have? She drinks a lot of coffee… it’s like an addiction (another part of me in her!). She’s also rather messy… she forgets to take off her shoes when she walks through the house, so she often trails mud with her.
  7. What makes them laugh out loud? Her cat
  8. How do they display affection? She doesn’t often because she keeps to herself a lot, but hugging is one of the ways.
  9. Mental handicaps? I’m not entirely sure what fits under this category. She doesn’t have a mental delay, but she has anxiety.
  10. How do they want to be seen by others? She wants to be seen as kind, brave, strong, and adventurous
  11. How do they see themselves? Often negatively. She’s very insecure… doesn’t like her appearance, thinks she is weak, questions her decisions
  12. How are they seen by others? Kind, loving, adventurous, but also rather frail
  13. Strongest character trait? Luna is very adventurous and likes exploring. She spends a lot of time in woodsy areas, it’s where she feels most at peace
  14. Weakest character trait? She’s questions herself a lot
  15. How competitive are they? She isn’t
  16. Do they make snap judgements or take time to consider? Luna takes time to consider decisions…lots of time, lots of questioning
  17. How do they react to praise? She accepts it, but gets embarrassed and brushes it off saying “oh, it was nothing”
  18. How do they react to criticism? She doesn’t take it well. It makes her anxious and spiral
  19. What is their greatest fear? Isolation
  20. What are their biggest secrets? That’s a secret;) It’s revealed in the first chapter to readers, and her family knows but she can’t tell anyone else, including her best friend
