How to Search a Job in the Digital Era

Look around you and you will realise that technology has become an integrated aspect of our lives. Whether it be from the laptop, phone or tablet on which you’re reading this, to the automatic coffee maker that makes your coffee, to the alarm clock which wakes you up, digitization is the new trend now. Digitization has made our lives easier and simpler. It has improved the quality of our lives. One of the main ways where it has improved our lives is in the Job hunting process.

Imagine you are sitting at home, near the telephone, waiting desperately for it to ring. In front of you, an entire bunch of newspapers and flier are waiting for you to look at them. In the newspapers, the classified section in marked and several other advertisements are displayed on the fliers. You have spent most of the morning going from one office to another, often in different parts of the town. You think you might have landed one interview, but you aren’t too sure. You have a thick stack of files that are your resumes that have to be given at various places.

Now flash forward a couple of years, you’re getting emails in your account about potential jobs that are available. You have your tab open and you’ve emailed your resume to at least 10 companies and you have heard back from them, requesting a skype interview. Your friend has advised you to sign up on LinkedIn, as that’s where the companies will look when they want candidates. You’ve applied everywhere appropriate and it’s time to see where you’ll get in.

It’s not hard to tell what sounds like a better way to search for jobs. Digitization has helped to improve the process of job searching and application. With the click of a button, you have access to millions of jobs on sites like Naukri.com. These are jobs that are highlighted to your tastes, educational qualifications and experience. With the click of another button, or a few more buttons, you can send your resume to millions of potential recruiters. That sounds like a dream come true. However, there are some things that should be kept in mind when it comes to recruiting digitally, whether you’re the recruiter or the person searching for the job.

LinkedIn and Social Media

Whether you’re a recruiter or a job seeker, remember to keep an eye out for social media and LinkedIn. LinkedIn profiles are necessary to get noticed. Many employers admit to hiring potential employees based on their LinkedIn profiles. That’s why it is important to have a LinkedIn that is up to date and appealing to recruiters. Making a LinkedIn profile that is dynamic and unique is extremely important. It may also help you get the references for a job even if it doesn’t help you get the job directly. Never underestimate the powers od reference.

To the recruiters reading this, check out if the potential candidate has a LinkedIn profile. Go through the LinkedIn profiles. You might end up finding out more about potential candidates and that is always a good thing.

Digital Resumes and Video Interviews

Resumes need not be pen and paper anywhere. They needn’t be the boring sheet that every recruiter internally groans at on seeing. In the age of digitization, use the vast resources that are in your hand wisely. Create a video or an audio resume. Talk about your strengths, weaknesses, past careers and qualifications via a video. It sure beats submitting a piece of paper like everyone else does.

Recruiters can use Skype or any other video-calling app to take interviews. This saves a lot of trouble for the candidate and saves time for the potential employer as well.
There are a lot of factors that need to be considered when applying for a job online. Here are a few of the factors:

1. Using a standard resume: Change your resume according to the job you’re applying for. Look at the listing carefully. If there are keywords that are required or if there are changes that need to be made, make them accordingly. Don’t use the same resume without customizing it to the company where you’re applying.

2. Have a clean online presence: Chances are, once your resume is selected, recruiters will look you up online. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram are all potential places where it’s easy for recruiters to judge you. So, keep a clean online presence so that there are less chances for rejection.

3. Involve yourself in the company: Keep in touch with the latest products that the company has produced. Follow the company that you want to work at on social media. Sometimes, it’s the little things that matter the most.

4. Practice and Prepare: Whether it’s a face-to-face interview or a video interview, prepare for the interview. Look at possible flaws and be prepared to address the flaws. Practice your posture and speech style. After all, practice makes perfect.
