NEW DELHI: For a while the president of the United States has been caught in a standoff between China and his country. That standoff has revolved around tariffs, trade wars and sanctions. Donald Trump’s iPhone has now got China and a smartphone company that has been at the centre of trade wars involved as well.

A New York Times Report recently mentioned that the president of the United States has been using his personal iPhone a lot. Trump, however, in a couple of tweets refuted the story and called it “made up fake news’.

The report had stressed on the fact that despite being warned not to use his personal phone for most of his calls. Intelligence officials, according to the report, revealed that they have “reasons to believe” that Chinese and Russian spies might have been eavesdropping on the president’s calls and could get access to classified information.

China, as expected, has denied the reports and offered the US an intriguing solution: use a Huawei phone. Hua Chinyang, an official spokeswoman of Chinese foreign ministry, reportedly told The Washington Post that “if they are worried about iPhones being tapped, they can use Huawei.”

In a separate interview to South China Morning Post, Hua said that the NYT report was “fake news.” According to a report in Time, Hua told journalists, “… I suggest they replace their iPhone with Huawei ones if they are really concerned about security issues.” She was quoted as saying, “Seeing this report, I feel there are those in America who are working all-out to win the Oscar for best screenplay.”

As for Trump’s iPhone problem, he is rumoured to carry three iPhones. Only two of them have been vetted by the National Security Agency, which means the ability to intercept communication on the phones is limited.

It’s the third iPhone that is the bone of contention and has US officials worried. The third iPhone – not sure which variant – which Trump uses is a regular iPhone which he uses mostly to call people, according to NYT.
