National Park Pilot Crew Performs Three Dramatic Helicopter Rescues in One Day

Over the weekend, three national parks across Washington state required emergency assistance from Helicopter rescue teams. In just a single day, a trio of national park helicopter rescues took place.

At 9:00AM on Sunday morning, a report came in about an 18-year-old hiker who was in respiratory distress. Located in the northwestern section of the wilderness in the North Cascades National Park, the helicopter crew was unable to depart immediately due to the weather conditions. Cloud cover was thick, making it dangerous to takeoff. The rescue team had to wait until midday for the clouds to disperse. Once the helicopter crew was able to safely get to the young man, they hoisted him up ad flew him to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.

By later afternoon, the crew received a distress call to rescue a 55-year-old man. Located in the Olympic National Park, he had gotten lost while hiking six days earlier. Park rangers had formed a search party that went off on foot. They found the man at 2:30 AM on Sunday, but he was too weak to travel. With such rough terrain, rescuers decided to call in helicopter assistance. The pilot and his experienced crew were able to lift the elderly man out to safety and deliver him to a local hospital for treatment.

The third and final rescue of the day should actually count as two. The crew received the last distress signal to come to the aid of a pair of climber who had been injured on Mount Rainier’s Liberty Ridge in Mount Rainier National Park. The signal’s point of origin came from the activation of an emergency beacon. Late that evening, the final national park helicopter rescue was underway. Climbing to approximately 9,500 feet in elevation, the helicopter crew picked up the injured climber at 9:00PM. They were then escorted to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment.

The Mount Rainier National Park aviation manager, Glenn Kessler, told reporters that this helicopter rescue crew was formed back in 2015 to assist park rangers with rescue missions. For the summer months, the three national parks share a short-haul helicopter on contract. Through training and communication skills, the trio of parks is able to organize rescue missions seamlessly, as demonstrated with Sunday’s dramatic events.
