Samsung Unveils the World’s Largest-Capacity Solid State Drive
The electronics giant, Samsung Unveils the World’s Largest-Capacity Solid State Drive (SSD) with the largest storage capacity of the 30720GB drive called PM1643. The new SSD PM1643 is the most storage ever crammed into the 2.5-inch form that offers sequential read and write speeds of 2100MB/s and 1700MB/s, respectively along with 30.72TB of storage, which is about three times faster than a standard SSD.
The product is designed to meet the demands of next-generation enterprise customers and storage system who are looking to move from the mechanical parts of the standard disk-based hard drive.
According to Samsung, the product PM1643 is a combination of 32 of the new 1TB NAND flash packages, each of which contains 16 layers of 512 GB V-NAND chips. The latest enterprise SSD by Samsung is so spacious that you can store about 5,700 full HD movies, which roughly equals to 500 days of non-stop video.
In addition to the generous capacity, the new SSD is the successor to the 15.36TB enterprise SSD that was announced in March 2016. Compared to the other 2.5-inch SATA SSD, this new drive by Samsung is touted to deliver nearly twice the performance levels of its predecessors.
Other than performance, Samsung made some significant changes to the device like the new giant SSD device supports metadata protection and data retention features from sudden power failures. On the software front, its error correction code (ECC) algorithm claims to offer high reliability along with minimal storage maintenance. Also, this is the first time when an SSD has come with a TSV enabled technology that can interconnect 8GB DDR4 chips, creating 10 4GB TSV DRAM packages.
Samsung has already started manufacturing 30.72TB SSD model and is planning to come up with other versions of enterprise SSD level later this year. With the aim of including various market segments, Samsung had once again shattered the storage capacity barrier and opened up new horizons for ultra-high enterprise capacity storage systems worldwide.
