the power of routine, and the joy in breaking it

routine. Habit. regimen. pattern. all things that help us sail through our days and lives in an orderly and predictable manner. or, do they? does order bring happiness in its wake?

what of those of us who understand the power of routine but lack the discipline to let it do its job? how often have we promised ourselves that the next day, or week, or month, or year will be the start of a new routine, one that will help us wash away the ill-effects of our so-far order-less days? be it promising ourselves to leave the warm confines of our beds a little earlier in the morning, or to put in that seemingly unattainable half an hour of exercise in a day, or to find the time to read some of our favorite fiction every day, we routinely promise ourselves a dose of routine. never to get round to it,  more often than not. is it the thrill of Breaking a habit that hasn’t yet been formed, of moving the stick a little farther so that the carrot continues to dangle tantalizingly within sight? does the fear missing out on ‘life’ make us blame the boredom of routine when we don’t really have it in our lives?

as new year resolutions start to fall thick and fast by the wayside, maybe the only resolution that matters is to let routine have its way!
