What Is The Open University? Is It A Good University?

I’ve been trying to write this article for weeks but I didn’t really know what to write, what to share with you. I’m starting a business course at the Open University and I’m super nervous and excited about it.

What is the Open University?

This is a public distance learning and research university. Is also one of the biggest universities in the UK.

The 2 main characteristics of the Open University are:

  1. Is open to everyone. There are no minimum requirements to study with them.
  2. It allows you to study from home. You’ll have access to all your study materials online as well as in paper format because they’ll send you textbooks through the post.

This is perfect for adults that already have a family and are working but wish to study at a higher education level.  You’ll be able to Study from home and on a part-time basis. You’ll need a minimum of 10 hours weekly to study which is easily doable.

You can find out more about Open University on their website.

Is the Open University any good?

According to Georgia James, a writer at The Huffington Post UK, enrolling on a course at the Open University it can be a great start for anyone that wants a new challenge and progress in their career.

Just to give you an idea, there are over 170,000 people studying with the OU (Open University) right now and over 2,000,000 since it was founded. This makes the OU the largest academic institution in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.

The OU was ranked the 47th in the country and 630th in the world by the Center for World University Rankings in 2016 (Wikipedia, 2018). This pretty much means that yes, the OU is good and if you’re thinking of starting a course at higher education level you should consider the OU as an option.

How much it cost to study at the OU?

When you think about studying at a university you probably think straight away that costs a fortune. Such is not the case with the OU. They offer a wide range of flexible payment options and also funding. In fact, over 60% of the students don’t need to pay anything during their course because they’re eligible for a student loan.

I got my access module for free and a student loan, which means that I won’t have to pay anything for my course until I receive over 25k a year. Cool, isn’t it? I’ve never imagined that I’d be able to go to university because I always assumed that it would be too expensive.

I hope you found this information useful. If you have any questions regarding the Open University or about my experience with them, feel free to contact me or to leave a comment below.
