The Jamal Khashoggi case

The Jamal Khashoggi Case

Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and vocal dissident disappeared after he visited the Saudi Arabian Consulate in Turkey on October 2, 2018 and was allegedly murdered in the premises of the consulate. After a raw of investigation and international intervention, Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor announced today that the five suspects charged with murder of Khashoggi will face death penalty.

The Saudi public prosecutor confirmed that Khashoggi was first drugged and then dismembered in the Saudi consulate building in Turkey’s Istanbul and his body parts were handed to an unknown agent for disposal. The public prosecutor also announced that death penalty will be awarded to all five suspected officials involved in the Jamal Khashoggi murder case. The five Saudi officials includes the head of forensics at the national intelligence service, and members of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s security detail.

As per Saudi, the orders were to abduct the journalist, but agents decided to kill him when he resisted – which contradicts with an earlier Saudi finding that the murder was premeditated. The order also denied any claims that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the murder and instead, it was his two top officials who had made orders. It has been more than seven weeks later, and despite the international outcry for justice, the case remains a scandal and we still have no clue about what really happened and who killed Khashoggi.
