Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena reportedly claimed that Indian intelligence agency – Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of plotting his assassination. Rejecting all such reports, Sirisena called PM Modi to clarify that he did not accuse the RAW’s purported involvement in an alleged plot to assassinate him; testifying that India is not planning to kill him.

Just a day before Sri Lankan PM Ranil Wickremesinghe’s two-day official visit to India, a media source present at Sri Lanka’s cabinet meeting in Colombo on Tuesday reported that Sri Lanka’s President Mauthripala Sirisena has accused RAW for being involved in plotting an assessment plan against him. Reciprocating to the allegations, New Delhi denied the involvement in any anti-Lankan activities and speculated involvement of China, which is growing popularity in the little island nation.

On Wednesday, Sirisena immediately made an official telephonic call to Modi, to specifically convey the message directly to Modi that the “mischievous reports were utterly baseless and false” and appeared to be meant to create “misunderstanding between the two leaders as well as damage the cordial relations between the two friendly neighbours”. Furthermore, he informed that he and his government has taken urgent steps to publicly reject the reports during his meeting with the Indian high commissioner in Colombo on Wednesday.

PM Modi appreciated the prompt efforts made by Sirisena to debunk the malicious reports and his value for the mutually beneficial ties between India and Sri Lanka. Just a day after the entire row, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is about to land in New Delhi today evening, leaving the controversial media reports in backdrop and focusing on holding “wide-ranging talks” with India on Saturday.
