Why serverless computing is the next big thing in technology

Cloud Computing has over the last decade become the standard on how solutions can be delivered both in B2B and B2C formats. As cloud computing became more ubiquitous more and more technologies and solutions were created to improve efficiency in cloud computing delivery and the latest technology which is currently making waves in that space is Serverless Computing.

What is serverless computing?

In traditional cloud computing services enterprises rent server space on the cloud for cheaper rates because they share the server with other enterprises. This is the basis of public cloud. Serverless computing takes it one step further. Instead of enterprises/businesses hiring server space like real estate in a building serverless computing allows firms to pay only for services which they consume similar to an al-lar carte menu at a restaurant.

Put simply Serverless computing allows the cloud provider to manage the allocation of machine resources dynamically based on load requirements. Pricing is the based on the actual amount of the resources consumed, rather than on pre-purchased capacity.

But that doesn’t mean Serverless computing doesn’t require servers. They still do. The term “serverless computing” is used because for the end user the server management and capacity planning decisions are completely hidden and they only use the application

Examples include AWS Lambda and Google functions.

What are the advantages of serverless computing?

  • Cost: Instead of buying an x amount of servers and paying a fixed amount every month you will only be invoiced based on the actual amount of resources you use and since in the traditional IaaS methodology of procurement we used to procure server space based on peak demand serverless computing allows for significant cost savings
  • Scalability:  Since it is the solution provider’s job to take care of load balancing application creators using the serverless computing model needn’t worry about scalability and other operational issues

What are the disadvantages of serverless computing?

  • Vendor lock-in: Most serverless computing applications depends on the usage of vendor-specific APIs. This type of usage of vendor-specific tools leads to significant switching costs in the future
  • Performance: Latency issues esp in codes which are not frequently used
