So why not help prevent it? Far too many Kings are lost everyday… and with a bit of awareness, some TLC, and attention to detail some of the more common ailments can be prevented or mitigated naturally. As his Queen, his Beta, his precious Lois Lane read on to find out how to naturally combat kryptonite in YOUR Superman.

According to the Men’s Health Network, a lack of awareness, weak health education, and unhealthy work and personal lifestyles have caused a steady deterioration of the well-being of American men. The top 10 fatal diseases in our male population are: Men’s Health

  • Heart Disease (>600,000 deaths/yr)
  • Cancers (~600,000 deaths/yr)
  • Injuries (~150,000 deaths/yr)
  • Respiratory/Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (~150,000 deaths/yr)
  • Stroke (~140,000 deaths/yr)
  • Alzheimer’s Disease (~95,000 deaths/yr)
  • Diabetes (~80,000 deaths/yr)
  • Influenze and Pneumonia (~60,000 deaths/yr)
  • Kidney Disease (~50,000 deaths/yr)
  • Suicide (~45,000 deaths/yr)

We are reminded all the time to watch our diet and exercise. But many of us rarely take heed. Helping your Superman be more accountable for his longevity, supporting him in that growth, and joining him in that journey can strengthen your relationship and quality of life and perhaps lengthen your lifespan.

Tip #1: Incorporate a daily or bi-weekly walk into your quality time.

According to the National Cancer Institute a sedentary lifestyle promotes the presence of many health risks, while one incorporating routine physical activity lowers the risks of cancer, obesity, inflammation, and gastrointestinal problems.

…for substantial health benefits, adults [should] engage in 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity Aerobic Physical Activity, 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity, every week…. performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes throughout the week.

Walking briskly together for 30 minutes, 5-days a week, or a light 1-hr jog 2 or 3 times a week, may add years to the life you two share, and trim inches off the waist. Make a date of it. Walk 30 minutes to an ice cream parlor in the summer, or to a park in the spring. Make it fun. Choose a different path each time – discover your surroundings together.

Tip #2: Promote Cleaner Eating

Nature gives us everything we need to live healthily. It’s people who make it complicated.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”… Green apples are a great snack in between meals to satisfy the appetite and offer a range of nutrients – more so than red apples.  Green apples contain calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc, fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacin, Thiamin, and more.

[Green apples] help prevent digestive problems, help regulate blood glucose and good cholesterol.  Prominent health benefits include dietary fiber, which decreases the chance of colon cancer. Green apples also help lower cholesterol levels, ease digestion, reduce liver and digestive tract Issues. Green apples are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenol. Because of this, they can prevent various forms of cancer and DNA damage.

Help decrease the chance of heart disease by making better food choices. Have more meals incorporating fiber-rich whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, beans and lentils.  Choose plant-based fats such as avocado, nuts, seed, and olive oil instead of animal-based fats such as butter. Other “heart-healthy” food are salmon, berries (especially raspberries), fat-free or low-fat milk or yogurt, oatmeal, kidney beans… try mixing them into your cuisine more often.

Aim for at least two servings of oily fish each week, says the American Heart Association. A serving is 3.5 ounces. That’s a little bit bigger than a computer mouse.

Tip #3: Get Nuts!

Some studies show that adding an ounce of nuts per day seemed to cut the risk of stroke in half.  Walnuts are exceptionally healthy in this regard. Get Nuts!

Get crazy serious about your and your man’s health. Cut the unhealthy habits, like smoking, reduce the boozing, increase the hours spent resting. Take an inventory of your lifestyle. Pay attention to what makes you feel energized v. sluggish.

For your growing Clark Kent, promote meal prepping, healthy breakfasts, and planned lunches and dinners.

For your Superman in his prime, try out a meal-plan, burst out the crock-pot and cook once a week if you’re all too busy to cook daily. Meal prep on your down day, do it together.

Tip #4: Mind over Matter

Mental health is equally, if not more, important than physical health.  What afflicts us mentally will begin to affect us physically if not addressed. Keep your Superman on his toes by providing a safe and inspirational platform for him to grow himself – and grow you. Grow together. Encourage each other. Stay committed.

Learning together can create a bond as well as a lasting stability between you two.  Lest not forget, afflictions such as depression affect men just as much as women… the difference is, men are not afforded the same societal encouragement to show their despair. See: Understanding the Mold of a Man Help reduce the chance of depression by staying involved in each other’s lives, communicating, and uplifting one another.

For your Senior Superman, help him reduce risk factors by being a part of his lifestyle maintenance.

Alzheimer’s prevention

The societal push to treat everything by medicating with OTC drugs reverses the natural healing and prevention we’re capable of experiencing through a lifestyle of healthier choices.  As with most things, change is easier when you’re doing it with someone. So do it with each other, do it for each other, do it for yourselves.
