Venue Review: Winters Jazz Club

As Wynton Marsalis put it, “Jazz music is America’s past and its potential, summed up and sanctified and accessible to anybody who learns to listen to, feel, and understand it.”  Winter’s Jazz Club in Chicago hosts jazz musicians specializing in everything from straight-ahead jazz to swing, bid bang, New Orleans-style and more.  Every show at Winter’s Jazz Club furthers the love of live jazz, where you can savor a drink for purchase along with innovative arrangements of the best jazz songs around.”

Recently, the Jeremy Kahn Quartet performed at the Winter’s Jazz Club and astounded the crowd with covers of Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Having been featured in the Chicago Tribune, and widely known in the jazz clubs and orchestra pits of New York, Jeremy Kahn’s talent as a renowned pianist is evident when you hear him play.

Andy Baker – trombone, Clark Sommers – bass, and Phil Gratteau – drums complete the quartet and their warm and humorous personalities make the experience of watching and hearing their brilliance the perfect vibe for a chilly winter evening.

Owned by Chicagoan Scott Stegman, the venue is equipped with warm lighting and a theme likened to a 1950’s venue remade ultra-chic.

The charming and spacious 2,600sf venue is equipped with ample seating around the bar and in an adjacent area along the stage. Elevated banquette on both sides of the stage and cafe tables along front offer great line of sight. The acoustics are ample for distributing the sounds through the entire space. A 1975 Baldwin sets the stage and resonates through the space complimented perfectly with the drums, bass, and trombone of the Quartet.

Definitely looking forward to future performances in this lovely location. Equally excited about year-round acts as I am about Winter acts, imagining sitting along the windows enjoying the view in the Chicago spring evenings. However, the cascade of the winter wonderland does add a perfect touch to the ambiance. Winter’s Jazz Club is the perfect name for this lovely place.

With a beautiful view of the boat slips and frozen waters and dusting of snow outside the floor-to-ceiling windows from a seat at the fully-stocked bar, the atmosphere channels your class and sophistication and is a wonderful experience.

Keep in mind there is a minimum purchase requirement of $10/person/set. Small price to pay for a great experience. Coat check is available, convenient and free. Parking is available either along the street or in local garages.
