Country Styles

There is more than one type of Country Style in the world, there is the French country style, English country style and etc. However this post focuses more on the English country style as I have previously written about the French country style.

When decorating or planning a country styled room, you want to make sure that the room gives a cosy and warm feeling when you are inside it. Most people try and focus the country style by trying to make the room feel like you are in a cottage even though you may be in a modern home or in a cottage and want to keep the cottage feel throughout. When designing a room you not only need to think about the arrangement of the furniture but also the detail of the room such as the fabric used and the accessories which are used to stage the room. When choosing the fabrics for the room I think that you should use traditional fabrics that have a pattern on them such as striped or tartan fabric. Floral patterns may be incorporated into the design you may use floral wallpaper or even just use the floral patterns on cushions. By using the floral patterns you are making a connection to the countryside.

When picking out furniture, you should try and use furniture which is more traditional and has a patterned fabric on it. Such as a wooden sofa that has a tartan fabric on it. This makes the room feel cosy and homely and also carries the country style through the furniture. The furniture should be made from wood as when I think of traditional, the first thing that comes into my head is wooden furniture. Adding a armchair and sofa into the room allows the comfortable feeling to be approached. Adding cupboards or cabinets can be added to a room maybe able to add storage and be a good display piece. I would choose a wooden framed glass display cabinet because I would have the storage to shows other my collection.

When adding accessories into the room, you should add a rug that has a simple pattern on it and is a light colour and isn’t to bold so avoiding using yellow, pink or red to the rug, use colours such as duck egg blue, watery green, off-white. The cushions may be any cushions you want in your room, but in my opinion you should try and keep it in the country style theme, use a design which may have birds, flowers, or even insects in them. Adding paintings or decorative mirrors onto the wall allows the room to have a personalised touch to it. It may be a painting of families members or nature, you may want to hang up some pictures of your family or ancestors which makes the room more personal.

Adding characteristics to the room or just exposing the characteristics give a country feel to the room such as you may have some wooden beams in your home, or a chimney breast, wooden flooring or even a brick wall. These things can be used within a country styled room. If you have a chimney in your room, then use the chimney as the focus point of the room. Adding shelves to your chimney breast can help you to display ornaments or picture frames that want you to show others or to display. You might add a log burner to the chimney to add a touch of warmth and homely feel to the room. The chimney can have candle put in there if you don’t want to pay for a log burner. If you do have a log burner you can add the log basket to the chimney place which adds a basic homely feel to the room.

When choosing the colour scheme try and pick light and soft colours such as duck egg blue, greens, watery greens, off white, olive, pink, brown and purples. I would suggest that the furniture be in a dark tone colour such as a walnut, taupe, coffee and mocha. If you are choosing wooden flooring try and varnish it with a dark tone such as hickory, umber or chianti. Below, are some pictures to give you some ideas of country styled room.
