Can Bed Bugs Live in your Car? Here’s Our Answer and Solution

Tags: bed bugs bug

Bed bugs are perhaps one of the most annoying creatures you can come across. These critters cause nasty bites that itch and irritate for a long time. They are also unhygienic and overtime their exoskeletons can become a source of bad odor as well.

As the name suggests, most people would expect to find these in beds but the truth is that these persistent parasites can be found pretty much in every kind of fiber and as such the upholstery and seats in a car are prime real estate for these insects. In this article, we will take a look at how high a chance there is of finding Bed Bugs living in your car and if they do, how to get rid of them.

They are more common than you think:

Since there are many tight corners inside a car, there will always be some nook or corner that might end up never being properly cleaned and as such, bed bugs can live very easily there. If your bed is infested with bed bugs then chances are that your car might also have bed bugs. They can easily cling to clothes and this way can be transported to your car.

They are pretty minuscule in nature and that allows them to be transported easily. Their flat bodies also mean that you won’t be necessarily able to feel them until they bite you. They also reproduce prolifically and even a couple of bed bugs can lead to an entire infestation.

Signs that your car is infested with bed bugs:

As these critters are very small by nature, it is very difficult to see them. That doesn’t mean that you have to peer at the inside of your car through a microscope. Thanks to technology you can use a bed bug detector to make finding them very helpful. You can look out for the following signs.

1.) Look for tiny bloodstains.
2.) They usually leave behind a very distinguishable exoskeleton.
3.) They often leave spots that are dark brown in color

How to get rid of bed bugs:

Sadly, there is no easy way to get rid of bed bugs. The first thing you need to do is remove all the upholstery you can along with the seat covers. Wash them in scolding hot water to kill off any bed bugs on them along with their eggs. Repeat this a couple of times for good measure.

Then use a vacuum that has been designed specifically to remove bed bugs. Make sure that the vacuuming is done quickly so that the bed bugs do not have enough time to get free. Make sure not to miss even the tiniest nook or cranny. Once the vacuuming is done, move on to steam cleaning. This will ensure that all traces of bed bugs are gone.

The method that we mentioned above is long and arduous but is also very safe and you can use your car immediately after. If however you are short on time or do not have a vacuum, then using a chemical agent to kill bed bugs is a great idea. Use one that has been designed for cars. Make sure that you keep kids and pet away from the car while the chemical is active. This is the biggest drawback of this method as you might have to wait a few days before you will be able to safely use your car.

Finally, ensure that your house is also free of bed bugs as all this effort will go to waste if you end up transporting a new batch of these critters to your car.

How to get rid of bed bugs naturally:

If you want the benefit of powerful action without all the chemical products opt for this natural solution. Spray this on the affected areas and allow to dry. After the area is dry do a recheck with this bed bug detector  to be sure they are all gone.

Bed bugs can be a huge nuisance but it is a problem that you do not want to ignore.
