Beauty: It’s in the Smallest of Things

There was once a man who would do all his work by himself. From cleaning his room’s Floor to patching up torn shirts; he was known for being self-reliant and hardworking. He was never ashamed of getting his hands dirty in the process. He never believed himself to be ‘above’ such mundane everyday chores.

This man was also the greatest leader the world has ever seen. He was the greatest warrior, politician, economist, shepherd, husband, father, nephew; you name it. Books have been written on the diversity of his character; he was humble, modest, kind, generous and patient. He had seen the trials and tribulations that could never have been borne by an ordinary human being. Yet he struggled through it all with the bravest determination.

Tune in to the 21st century.
Toasting bread? Grab a toaster to do it for you!
Doing the laundry? Just throw it all in the automatic washing machine!
Buying some groceries? Order it online!

Oh yes. The never-ending debate: is technology making us dumb?

Technology is progressing and we are seeing changes that this world has never seen before. Where human beings were once toiling, robots are whizzing around and getting the job done in a lot less time. And believe you me, this can get very dangerous.

The danger isn’t in the robots suddenly turning against humanity (Terminator-style).

*sniffs* No, I’m not crying…

Also leave aside the possible connections between increased technology-use and the dramatic rise in diseases.

The danger lies within ourselves.

Once you begin to let go of these seemingly boring, time-wasting daily routine tasks, you’ll start losing your grip on the small things. We’ve all heard of ‘Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves’. Now we’re all going to be focusing on the pounds while the pennies will be taken care of good old Robo-Maid!

Each and every one of us has a dream or an aspiration. With enough hard work, dedication and passion, a lot of us do achieve these goals in due time. But once you start to think that you’re too good to wipe the bathroom floor or make your bed, your achievements are going to start poisoning you. The process will be very gradual, but with that one thought in your mind, it has begun.

You may not notice it, but soon enough, things will begin to bore you. Forget the small things; even huge parties thrown for your sake and the most sought-after medals to your name will fail to incite any feelings. Where you were once satisfied with that single cup of tea after a perfect day, a table laden with all your favourite desserts will bring no Happiness.

And we all know where it started!

Say what

If you think I am wasting your time, start experimenting on your own. If you don’t do any simple day-to-day chores, start today! Pick that broom up and give your room a quick clean! Take all your dirty clothes and wash them in a plastic tub (no help from the machine, for once!). Why not wash your plate after you’re done with dinner, too?
Once you get in the habit of doing these tiny things by yourself, you’ll start to see colours in your life again. The smallest of things will brighten your day. You’ll find happiness in the dullest of moments. You may even be a source of happiness to others around you, as your contagious smile brings some positivity to their lives as well!

Don’t hesitate. If you want change, you have to change. Start today, start now!
