Personal Privacy: Protect Yourself from Violations

Very often, we all get our Personal boundaries and Privacy violated one way or the other. This can get frustrating and annoying. At times, it’s even scary because you wonder what aspect else of your life you can keep safe from others if not your privacy.

But if others won’t give a hoot about respecting your personal space? Don’t despair or feel afraid. The thing is, you are the only one who can guard your privacy; it’s no one else’s responsibility but yours.

What exactly is Personal Privacy?

Put simply, Personal Privacy is the right of people to make decisions concerning their own affairs and how they want to lead their lives away from the public limelight.

How Personal Privacy is violated

There are several ways one’s privacy can be intruded. They include:

Name Appropriation or Likeness

This is usually seen in the marketing industry where ads of products are displayed with images of a person without their concern. Or with a voice note that sounds almost exactly like someone to mislead others into thinking it is that person. Usually, this happens to people who are influential in the area that’s relevant to the product.

Disclosure of a person’s private facts openly

We can see this happen always in the media when they latch onto news of a person who will bring in huge ratings. They then release it without thought of the person or seeking consent from him/ her.

Intrusion of solitude

This is manifested in the form of surveilling a person without their permission, someone else listening in on another person’s calls though not asked to, intercepting a person’s mail, taking secret videos or pictures of another person in their home, cars, offices, on the streets, etc.

Dissemination false or misleading information about a person publicly

In order to attract uncalled-for public attention to a person or simply humiliate them, some people resort to spreading false rumors about another person.

How you can actively protect your Personal Privacy

Educate yourself on the laws concerning Privacy where you find yourself

This is the first way of protecting your privacy. Since it’s the only way you’ll notice if your privacy is being violated and the actions you can take against it. Knowledge is power and it comes into play here perfectly.

Make your encounter public

When you expose culprits who violate your privacy, first of all, your violator will get punished for their crime, other people who are getting violated will speak up, perpetrators of this act will also become cautious and limit their actions or stop altogether

Do not let the case go away lightly

In some parts of the world, most people think insisting on getting justice for a crime committed against you is a waste of time. This shouldn’t mislead you into doing the same if your case is not getting the needed attention. Remember that it is the sanctity of your life at stake. Remember also that others went through a lot to ensure that there’s a law that protects others against violations of privacy so keep at work and make sure your culprit gets punished or you get the compensation due you.

Practice what you preach

If you don’t want your privacy violated, don’t violate that of others. For instance, you spot a celebrated artiste or athlete on the street. Then you follow them to where they are and then secretly take a video or pictures of him/her plus who they are with. Even if you don’t take the pictures anywhere, it’s still not the right thing to do. Since you have the option of walking up to them and politely asking for a picture. Don’t violate someone and expect not to be violated back.

Try to educate the people around you

If we are all to start educating others on personal privacy and why it important as well as how it is violated, I am certain in no time, word will spread and a lot of people will be in the know. I bet some violators of privacy do not know about the consequences of their actions and should they know, will put a stop to their actions.

Last Words

You are the only one who can guard your privacy; it’s no one else’s responsibility but yours. Don’t forget this.
