Completed on March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower was world’s tallest man-made structure for 41 years until the completion of Chrysler Building in New York 1930. It is 324 meters tall (including antennas) and weighs 10,100 tonnes.

  • It is possible to climb the tower but there are 1,665 steps so people take the lift. And the lift travel the distance of 103,000 km a year – two and half times the circumference of the earth.
  • During the cold weather, the tower shrinks by about 6 inches.
  • The engineer and architect behind the tower, Gustave Eiffel, was involved in a destructing attempt by the French to build a canal in Panama and his reputation was badly damaged.
  • Since its opening 250 million have visited the tower. Today 7 million people visit every year, making it the most visited paid-for monument in the world.
  • Repainting the tower which happens every 7 years requires 6 tonnes of paint.
  • It was originally intended to stand for 20 years before being dismantled, but its use as a wireless telegraph transmitter meant it was allowed to stand.
  • The tower comprises of 18,000 metallic parts, joined together by 2.5 million rivets.
  • The tower sways around 6-7 centimeters (2-3 inches) in the world.
  • There are 20,000 light bulbs used on Eiffel Tower to make it sparkle every night.
  • In 1905 a local newspaper organized a stair climbing championship at the tower. A.M.Forestier won, taking three minutes and 12 seconds to reach the second level.
