IMAX, an acronym for Image Maximum, is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards. The capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than traditional film formats, Imax has been popular among exceptional movie-makers and film-enthusiasts. As of 2016, there are 1,102 IMAX theaters globally.

Prasad’s IMAX theatre in Hyderabad is the only 70mm IMAX screen in India. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) had a record attendance at Prasad’s IMAX as it was the only screen in India to have presented the movie in 70mm IMAX format.

Other IMAX screens in India are Digital IMAX or referred as ‘LieMAX’. The difference between an IMAX (35mm or 70mm) and Digital IMAX is enormous and quite apparent. To produce and distribute a 70mm IMAX reel is logistics dilemma. For instance – IMAX reel for Interstellar (169 min) weighs around 360 Kg. That’s not the only difficulty, the IMAX projector for 70mm reel weighs between 1500-1800 Kg.

But the quality produced by an IMAX projector with an IMAX reel is exceptional, there is nothing like it. And since over the years India has repeatedly proved itself to be a significant market for Hollywood movies, there aren’t enough IMAX screens. Majority of the IMAX theaters in India are situated in south.

Dhoom 3 is the first bollywood film to be released in the IMAX motion picture film format, with Dolby Atmos surround sound. Before Baahubali: The Beginning, Dhoom3 was the most expensive Indian film. The film was a commercial success and received positive reviews for its visuals.

Though, local entertainment company PVR cinemas, has started their PVR-IMAX cinemas chain in some cities across India. Still, a highly significant market for Hollywood movies, India requires more IMAX screens all over the country, for the exceptional artistic cinema.
