It’s taken longer than usual, but finally, we’re returning to the world of Westeros to sink our teeth into more of G.R.R Martin’s dark and dirty world. July 17th sees the return of Daenerys Targaryen, her half-brother Jon and a host of other fan favourites.
At Two Honest Guys — like pretty much everyone else on the planet — we are big fans of the show. With the prospect of more Westerosi carnage looming, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to sit down and talk about everything Game of Thrones season 7.
In our latest Two Honest Guys podcast, we discuss wild fan theories, some more sane ideas and what we’d like to see this series.
As always though, we like to cater to everyone’s needs. If you’re too busy to catch the podcast or aren’t able to for whatever reason, here’s a recap over what we covered in the fifth instalment of the THG podcast.
Game of Thrones Season 7 Theories
Given that we have both TV show and books to go on, plenty of people have spun some pretty wild Game of Thrones theories relating to season 7. Some make more sense than others. Take our theory that Cersei will win out the Iron Throne and remain Queen beyond the end of the saga — could totally happen…
In our special Game of Thrones season 7 podcast, we chat all the biggest and best theories that have the potential to impact the newest season.
The Horn of Winter
So, there exists a legend within the Game of Thrones universe, a legend that states that there is a horn, The Horn of Winter, that if blown can destroy the wall. This theory comes from stories of the Free folk (wildlings) and suggests that the Night King has possession of this might object. The idea is that once he reaches the wall, he’ll blow the horn and the whole thing will shatter.
Ice Dragon Beneath the Wall
So sayeth the rumours, that there is more to The Wall than meets the eye. In the books, there is talk of hot springs that run beneath the wall, flowing all the way down to Winterfell, keeping it heated and inhabitable. What heats those hot springs? A dragon, say the theorists.
The idea is this. An Ice Dragon slumbers beneath the wall, and when the Horn of Winter is blown, and the wall comes down, it will be released. It’s a crazy idea, but it could provide an interesting way of the White Walkers combating Danny and her dragons, which currently have a bit of an upper hand.
Euron Greyjoy: Dragon Master
Speaking of having to deal with those dragons, the power they hold is one that is pretty hard to contest. Getting them out of the way, at least one or two, will make Daenerys a lot more vulnerable, and therefore more interesting to watch.
Another theory floating around is that Euron Greyjoy, Theon and Yara’s crazed uncle, is in possession of Dragonbinder, a horn imbued with magic that can control a dragon. In the Ice and Fire series, Euron does own a horn he claims to have been found in the ruins of Valyria, but we have no way of knowing if it can indeed control a dragon, or if it is even Dragonbinder.
What we do know is that having Euron control a dragon would be another way of weakening Danny and dealing with the threat and power of her winged beasts.
Bran Basically F***s Up Everything
So during the scene where Bran witnesses his father fight at the Tower of Joy, Bran is able to influence the past by shouting loud enough to have his voice echos as a ripple. We also see how he changes the past, resulting in Hodor so brilliantly holding that door.
Now people are theorising that he’s done even more damage than just messing up Hodor. In a vision, Bran sees the death of the Mad King. Some believe he has built a psychic link to Aerys Targaryen and he uses this link to attempt to sway the past, stop the Mad King killing his family members, leading to other deaths later on, and effectively nullifying the events of Game of Thrones.
What will instead happen is that Bran creates a paradox, where his whispers are the very thing that cause the Mad King to go mad. Why do people think this?
Well the Mad King is known for being unable to say much more than, ‘burn them all’, much like Hodor could say nothing but Hodor. Could it be, that Bran influences the past by warning the Mad King of the coming White Walkers, urging him to stop the infighting amongst Houses and instead, destroy the Others? — How would you kill the White Walkers? Burn them all…
Tyrion the Targ
Tyrion does not belong in the Lannister family. He never belonged there. Maybe that’s because he isn’t actually one of them. The Mad King was a brutal ruler, and is well known to have raped Tywin Lannister’s wife. Potentially, the ruthless Targaryen could have sired Tyrion.
This would explain why Tywin detested his son so. Not because he was a dwarf, nor because his mother died in childbirth, but because he believed he was not even his own child. His last words were even ‘you’re no son of mine’.
Anger at Tyrion’s ‘betrayal’, or knowledge he’s never cared to share?
There is more to this theory than that though. Aerys was a child of incest, which meant he was genetically flawed. Potentially he could have passed on a dwarfism mutation to Tyrion.
This theory supports another idea, that the dragon has three heads. In the House of the Undying, Danny has a vision of Rhaegar Targaryen, who speaks of how the dragon needs to have three heads. The concept is fairly complex, but in short, the idea is that in order for Danny to succeed, she needs to be part of a trio — this theory has more weight when you consider two things:
- Danny has three dragons but is primarily bonded with Drogon
- Jon Snow is a confirmed Targ
Tyrion as a Targ would make sense. Not only did he instantly have a bond with Danny, but he was also able to communicate — or at least not get eaten by — her other dragons.
Game of Thrones Season 7 Speculation
We didn’t just talk theories in our Game of Thrones season 7 podcast though, despite continuously finding out way back to them. We also chatted about things we think will probably happen — some good old fashioned, simple speculation.
We’ll See More of Petyr Baelish
This was less speculation and more of an item on a wishlist, but we’d love to see more of Baelish in season 7. The sly, cunning, ruthless little man has proven to be perhaps the most dangerous and formidable person in Westeros.
However, in season 6 of Game of Thrones, he was very much absent. In the new series, we’d like to see him getting up to no good with his plotting and scheming. The curtains are closing on this series, and for Baelish to gain the ultimate prize, he’ll need to make some pretty big moves to sit atop the Iron Throne.
We’d also love to see what he makes of the White Walkers and dragons. This is a man of politics and business, not magic.
Jon and Danny Meet
Now we know Jon is a fully-fledged Targ, he and Daenerys have to meet.
Danny looks set to arrive in the North in Game of Thrones season 7, and with Jon as the newly proclaimed King in the North, he’ll have to go and see what’s going on. You can’t ignore an army turning up on your doorstep. Nor can you ignore massive flying lizards eating your horses.
How this meeting will go is hard to say. It is likely they won’t declare war on each other, especially when Jon is keenly aware those dragons of hers will come in very handy against the White Walkers.
Will they figure out they are related? Who knows. If Bran shows up, definitely, but maybe somebody else knows something? If another alive knew about his secret lineage, surely it would be Varys?
Hound and Arya Reunite
There is nothing like a good heart-warming reunion, and that is exactly what we aren’t going to get in season 7 — not when it comes to Arya and the Hound at least. They are both on a collision course, and it seems crazy that they wouldn’t bump into each other while wandering around the North.
We can’t wait to see how they react to each other. There won’t be any hugs or tears here, but their chemistry was so great throughout season four that just being in the same shot is going to offer a very memorable scene.
Daenerys Going Crazy?
Danny’s father is the Mad King. Her mother was the Mad King’s sister. Oh boy.
Lunacy, like webbed feet, can be passed down through genetics. There are some compelling arguments out there that state Daenerys will follow in her father’s footsteps and slowly lose her shit. This video by Film Theory really says it better than we ever could:
We get a glimpse of some potential psychosis in season 6, when she tells Tyrion how she felt nothing when having to leave Daario behind. As season 7 of Game of Thrones progresses, we think we’ll start to get a feel of whether or not Danny has really inherited her father’s madness.
What We’d Like to See in Game of Thrones Season 7
To cap it off our special Game of Thrones season 7 podcast, the three of us each spoke about the one thing we’d like to see happen in this series:
Arya Takes Down Baelish: While I’d like to see Petyr on the Iron Throne, Ryan wants him out the picture. He’d like to see Arya discover the truth about Baelish — how he betrayed Ned Stark, tried to have Brann assassinated and essential feed Sansa to the dogs (Ramsay). If she were to discover this, Baelish would go straight to the top her list, and Ryan would love to see Arya exact revenge on this wicked man.
The Rise of Daenerys: Jess is a major Daenerys fan, and having watched her struggle through oppression, torment and uprisings, can’t wait to see her sat on the Iron Throne, dragon beside her. If there is anything Jess could take away from this series, it would be that snapshot of the powerful Daenerys Stormborn in her rightful place, as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. After all the heartbreak, all the pain of Game of Thrones, there would be a great deal of satisfaction in seeing Danny finally get what she’s always wanted.
The fall of Daenerys: Myself (James) played devil’s advocate here, as the thing I’d like to see in Season 7 of Game of Thrones is the end of Danny’s journey and the exact opposite of what Jess hopes to see. She’s come a long way, but now Danny has hit the shores of Westeros, it’s time to wrap things up for her. I can’t see her winning the Iron Throne, it would be just too much like fan service for G.R.R Martin to consider. To see her fall at the last hurdle would be incredibly tough to watch, and exactly what makes Game of Thrones such a great show.
