When you first hear the term RC cars, the first thing that comes into mind are the ones that you find in the toys section of the department store. These are known to be toy-grade RC cars. If you really want more fun, then you should consider getting hobby-grade RC cars. They come with powerful motors and can go to as fast as 60 MPH. There are even some nitro RC cars that can go faster.

There are two types of hobby-grade RC cars. These are gas and electric RCs. Gas RC cars are more expensive compared to electric-powered RC cars. However, they can run all day, as long as you have the fuel. They can also be a little louder.

How a Gas RC Car Works

When you purchase a RC car, you will also get a 2.4 GHz transmitter. It looks like a pistol with a Throttle and brake lever and a steering controller. You will need four to eight AA batteries to power the transmitter. The role of the transmitter is to send out the instructions that you want the RC to do. The RC car has a receiver that gets the instructions from the transmitter.

The steering of the RC car is controlled by a mechanism known as a RC servo. The throttle and brakes are controlled by an electronic speed controller or ESC. When you use the steering wheel, it directs the servo to turn to where you want it to go. It can turn at any angle just like a real car.
The throttle and brake mechanisms are similar to the steering. When the throttle lever is pulled, then the throttle servo on the RC car receives the instruction to make the car speed up. When the lever is pushed out, it turns on the brakes. Off-road RC cars have four disc brakes that can stop the RC car at top speeds.

The engine of the RC car is powered by Nitromethane. To start the engine, you first need to put some of the Nitromethane in the fuel tank and then prime the engine of the RC car. Then insert the glow plug igniter, and pull the starter. The glow plug acts as the spark plug off a real car, but in a RC car, you first need to heat it up in order to start the engine.

Once the engine of the RC car is running, then you control it through the transmitter. When the throttle is applied, it opens the carburetor of the RC car that mixes air and fuel. The wider the opening of the carburetor, the more air and fuel get in and the faster the car goes. When the brakes are applied, then the carburetor closes and slows down the car.

The engine of the RC car is connected to the crankshaft that rotates all the wheels during the application of the throttle. The high torques of the tires make the car goes fast. The carburetor of the engine can be adjusted to improve the performance of the RC car.

After-Run Maintenance of a Gas RC Car

After using your RC car, it is important that you do an after-run maintenance routine. This will ensure that your car is running at maximum condition. The first thing you need to remember is to run the engine until all the fuel is consumed. The fuel has alcohol content, and it can attract water that can lead to rust.

Then remove the glow plug and apply two to three drops of after run oil. Pull the cord so that the oil will spread throughout the engine. You can also put some oil into the carburetor by removing the air filter.
Remove the wheels and wash them. Dirt will easily come out of them. Then let them dry. You might also want to wash the air filters with soap and water. Then clean the RC car. It is important that you don’t use water or else you will damage the electric parts. The best way to clean it is with the use of an air compressor.
