ADD or ADHD

  • The correct medical term for Attention Deficit Disorder is ADHD. There are 3 subtypes of ADHD: Predominantly inattentive(commonly called ADD), Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and Combined. Through out this blog and the ADHD related sites linked from this blog the terms ADHD, AD/HD, and ADD are used interchangeably.

Shout out to my fellow ADD bloggers

Just wanted to give a quick congratulations to several of my fellow bloggers that were featured in Kay Marner's "Blog Therapy" article in the Winter edition of ADDitude Magazine.

The article included several of the blogs that I read on a regular basis including:

3 Really "stupid" ways I have wasted money this year

From time to time everybody makes mistakes that cost them money. All of my "stupid" ways that I have wasted money this year have been caused by either being distracted or not paying full attention to what I was doing. I share them with you so that you can learn from my mistakes, and so that you don't feel that badly when you make mistakes with managing your money.

1. At the self check out in the grocery store I requested 20 dollars cash back with my purchase. After I left the store it took me 10 minutes to realize that I forgot to take the cash from the dispenser.

2. Again at the grocery store, I left a candy bar that I had purchased with the clerk. The clerk had left it out for me, and I forgot about it.

3. At a sandwich shop I got charged for two large sandwiches when I had ordered two small ones. I did not realize this till after I got back home with the sandwiches.

It does absolutely no good for me to dwell on the errors I have made. The only thing I can do is learn from the mistakes I have made. While I need to be on the lookout to avoid these specific errors again, the main thing that these errors had in common is that I made all of these mistakes when I was both tired and hungry. I need to take steps to limit purchases when I am more prone to make spending mistakes.

Here are a listing of my seven favorite blog posts about ADHD for the month of October:

Why New Small Businesses Fail and ways to avoid it - Ignoring the competition

People with ADHD often have the traits that make them ideal small business owners. The Small Business Administration estimated that over 50% of small businesses fail within the first five years. For some of these small businesses failure is inevitable, sometimes there is nothing you can do to stop a business from failing. However in many of the cases the owners made key mistakes that could have been corrected. The Women's Enterprise Centre has a list of the Top 10 reasons why small businesses fail. I really liked the list and will go over how ADHD entrepreneurs can overcome the reasons on the list.

The second item on this list is ignoring the competition. Acknowledging that you have competition can provide an additional spark of motivation that will propel ADHD entrepreneurs to succeed. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors is critical for success. It allows you to see exactly what your potential customers are interested in, and you can get more insight on the strengths and weaknesses of your own business.

Keeping an eye on the competition can be a challenge for many ADHD entrepreneurs. ADHD business owners often are hyper-focused on providing superior goods and services. When this happens you lose sight of how to manage your business and more importantly you can lose sight of your customers needs and wants.

It is important to set aside some regular time to monitor your competition. You can do a lot of research on line at home. Make sure you go beyond just looking at their websites, make sure to use search engines to find out more information about your competitors and their key personnel. However, the best research is done in person, so take the time to see your competition live in action, the information that you get will be critical for your organizations success.

"Attention deficit disorder: Not just for kids"

Here is an excerpt from an interesting article by Andy Halloway that gives employers information on how to deal with employees with ADHD. This is a good read for both adults with ADHD and for people who have to work with ADHD adults.

Threatening an ADHD-affected employee might work, if the threat is immediate, the consequence severe enough and the task inescapable. But that’s a horrible way for someone to live — and to manage. Yet some with ADHD do that themselves as a form of motivation. They effectively create an artificial sense of urgency by waiting until the deadline before springing into action.

The Economy and Your ADD

By Jennifer Koretsky of ExperiencingADDvantages and ADDmanagement.com.

The 'doom and gloom' is upon us. It's in the papers, on the web, and all over the TV. Your friends, family, and neighbors can't stop talking about it.

The 'economic crisis' is on everyone's mind, and fear and anxiety are everywhere. Is it affecting you and your ADD?

If you're weathering the storm without feeling overly fearful and anxious, then bravo! I applaud you and encourage you to keep doing whatever is working for you.

However, if you're experiencing an abundance of negative thoughts and anxiety about the current financial climate, then keep reading.

What I don't want to talk about today is finance and economics. I'm not qualified to advise anyone in this regard.

What I am qualified to talk about is how a climate of fear and anxiety can wreak havoc on an ADDer, and what you can do about it. So let's begin by briefly looking at the reasons why ADDers in particular are having a difficult time right now.
