Veiled Lady (a poem)

Veiled Lady by Raffaelo Monti
marble c. 1860 | Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Veiled Lady by Raffaelo Monti

I stood so long in front of her
staring
that the security guard hovered.
As my fingers
reached toward the translucent
marble,
he made a sound in his throat.
I did not
desire her touch, just to reach light
captured
in stone as though it were real
and abiding
