What is Gum Disease?

An unnecessarily high percentage of adults in the United States have periodontal Disease (gum disease). Periodontitis literally means there is an infection around the teeth within the gum and bony tissues. The severity of Gum Disease varies, but even mild cases need to be treated as soon as possible. When you have mild gum disease, the tissues in your gums are inflamed, but a dentist can help you address the problem before it gets worse. If you don’t take steps to resolve the infection and prevent further inflammation, your gum disease can worsen to the point that it weakens the bone that supports your teeth, and that means you will permanently lose your teeth.
