Another Day in the Media

What I read is absolutely appalling. As a young women, I feel the need to stand up and voice my opinion. Most of the time, it is highly discouraged because 'whom am I to speak?'. It may simply be our society that it doesn't matter if something bad happens, but makes note when another nation has a negative news story. I research the facts prior to having preconceived notions, have a non-biased opinion until formulating and stating my argument, look through multiple sources (Not wiki folks!), and do pieces on things that many my age wouldn't normally do for 'fun‘ yet that I am passionate about/feel that is important to address. If you recall or look back, the first article that I wrote was regarding the Steubenville Rape case. If you read my Twitter account, you would notice comments regarding cases mentioned in the Media in140 characters or less opinions. If you have read any of my previous work, whether that be re Rick Ross, Miley Cyrus, I always speak against date rape drugs, rape culture, and the perspective of the media. As much as people don‘t think that the subject of rape is something that should be spoken of, it IS something that is relevant to our society. It does affect people. Yet, the majority of cases are not reflected in the media. When rape is mentioned, it usually is a case in ANOTHER country. Like I mentioned previously, people just ‘jump on board‘ and won‘t admit that their country experiences something negatively yet blast another country. What are two recent high profile cases to use as examples to illustrate the points? The American woman in Dubai who got raped and the girl who got gang-raped and killed in New Delhi. If these happened in North America, would they have been covered to the extent that they had? The victim would be blamed. I mean, how could people do such wrong? The victim clearly deserved it. If they got raped, they must have done something bad. If this sounds absurd, reflect back to the Steubenville case. This sixteen year old girl was raped by two high school football players at a party. She was passed out and could not consent to the individuals. People at the party took footage and distributed it among social media and texts. Yet, while she was the victim, it was her fault. The football players were considered the actual victims - even by CNN reporters! Does anything seem wrong about this? By looking at CNN, I have noticed an ongoing trend. They have the opportunity to pick and choose what they choose to provide coverage on. If it is seriously needed to make a population feel better for reporting on incidents like Dubai and New Delhi instead of the same incidents occuring in their own communities, there is something to actually think about. While CNN states otherwise, rape does happen. Whether it be in Canada, the United States, India, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, or Australia, rape will be an issue. Many cases go unreported by the media, some victims might not even say that they were raped, and others may get the blame game. But, who in the media is going to find those cases?
