A New Treadmill Experience…

Normally, when I run at the gym, I’ll hop on the Treadmill and run anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour (depending on how I feel of course) and then continue on with strength training. Well, I went to a Bally’s gym over in Saddle River, NJ and was talking about going on a quick run to one of my friends. While I was speaking to him, someone approached me with some advice.

The man came up to me in the locker room while I was changing and overheard the conversation. He decided to give me a little insight and Suggested that I try something called Interval Training. I didn’t know exactly what he meant by it, but then he gave me a brief explanation as to what it was.

Interval training is when you take your run and you mix it between low and high speeds. He suggested trying the run at 5.5mph for one minute, then the next minute run at 8.5mph. When I got on the treadmill, I ran about 20 minutes, and I have to tell you all, it went by pretty quick.

Now for normal runs, Most people are saying to themselves “I’ll just throw this towel over the information so I don’t worry about how far or long I’ve been running.” Well, for this Exercise, you need to pay attention to the time a lot. Luckily, it will go by very fast, just don’t look at the time the whole way.

This doesn’t necessarily have to be done on a treadmill, I might do a few outdoor runs with this very technique.

There are some benefits to running like this:

  1. Increase metabolism
  2. Burn more calories
  3. Increase run speed

I’m sure there are plenty more, but there are benefits for all running styles. Give this exercise a try and let me know what you all think. Enjoy!
