Hit or Miss: Lucky Starr x Dedrick Jamaal- “Versatility”

“Versatility” is the first single by female rapper Lucky Starr, which features the upcoming Dedrick Jamaal in the chorus. To be honest, I wasn’t extremely impressed with the song, and here’s why.

The Beat:

I didn’t have many problems with the beat, as it was pretty smooth and can accommodate different styles. Personally I thought of “Whatever You Like” by T.I. when listening to it, as it gives the same kind of upbeat, boasting vibe.

Lucky Starr:

I understand that this is Lucky Starr’s first song posted on Soundcloud and that she most likely is relatively new in the rap game. However, I found her lyrical content pretty generic. In this day of hip-hop generic rappers are finding less and less success, and this verse seems to fall right into that. Right off the bat she raps, “my style, they feelin’ me. My haters, they envy me. I’m what they pretend to be.” Another example is when she raps “while you turning down, we turning up”. I’d be lying if I say I haven’t heard these lines or a variation of it the majority of rap song’s in the past 10 years, it’s hardly fresh or original, something a new rapper should strive to be.

Another aspect I think she can build on is her voice. For almost the entire song she uses the same monotone style, and strays from it only once or twice, not illustrating her self proclaimed versatility. In her second verse she switches her flow up when she raps “hen and ciroc be all in my cup” which is one of the few times she strayed from her usual style, and it didn’t sound that bad.  I don’t mean to shred Lucky Starr in this review; I just wanted to explain why I wasn’t overly impressed.

Dedrick Jamaal:

I actually liked Dedrick’s contribution to this song. He blended well in the chorus and I like how he is starting to sing more and more. While Lucky Starr is still rapping he does a good job of staying subtle in the background, and when he sings alone it sounds pretty good. His part where he sings “lovin’ my lovin’ my lovin’ my versatility” was my favorite part of the song, and is currently stuck in my head.

Overall I wasn’t a huge fan of this song, but I’m sure with time and practice Lucky Starr can churn out a few uplifting party starters.
