James Yancey (aka Jay Dilla) produced a classic Hip-hop Album. My mom bought me that album for my birthday years ago. It was a beautiful moment. Wrapping paper surrounding my feet, I stood there gazing at the album I had been wanting for months. Finally, it was mine.

Listening to that album was an experience. The universal language of music via Hip-hop spoke to me. It still does. It is not just beats and raps, but life and dreams. It takes me away. The bass line chills the atmosphere. The horn sample is triumph in the air. The piano jabs at my soul causing slight goose bumps and slightly teary eyes. The lyricist paints murals. The drum break is the root that grows deep keeping the entire piece together and standing tall. I’m amazed every time I hear music like this. I experience it. I live it.

Earlier this week, a friend of mine helped me realize that I have been able to create experiences for people this summer. After rapping 32 times for more than 1600 people in 13 different cities, I know without question that this music is more about the experience than it is about raps and beats. At my events, I danced with people, I answered questions, I fell on people, I stood on my head (while rapping I might add), I joked and laughed, I began my modeling career, and I rapped a little bit too. But, it wasn’t just about the rapping. It was about connecting to people and creating a shared experience.

I want to continue to create positive experiences for people through the music I create.
