Fiber Arts Friday - 2015 Week 19

Welcome to Fiber Arts Friday!  This week I am reviewing the Leather, Lace, Grit & Grace book written by Denise Lavoie and having a give-away.

This book is a mixture of both crochet and knit patterns in a wonderful blend of yarn weights and textures written for various skill levels in patterns that are timeless and trendy.

I adore Denise's patterns.  I have knit a couple of her past patterns and her crochet patterns inspire me to pick up a hook.   She has used a few of my yarn blends in prior patterns and I am pleased to share that this book is no exception,  Two of her patterns use my Sport Weight Yarn in the Buccaneer blend of Suri Alpaca/Merino/Silk in the colorway Wine on the Vine.

Have I mentioned how I love her patterns?  Those who crochet please take no offense but the crochet is so beautiful that you think that it was knit.  One of the patterns that I really like also happens to use my yarn.  It is a necklace.  I love that Denise always includes jewelry in her patterns.  The amount of yarn is perfect for leftover yarn from another project.  I was hoping to share my version of this necklace but I am still learning to crochet so right now what I have on my hook doesn't resemble the beautiful necklace.  I am getting help from someone local (actually today at lunch) so that I can master the Puff Stitch and make this necklace.  I've been watching youtube videos all week but prefer to have someone right next to me.

The necklace I am speaking of is the Dutrieu Necklace.  Of all of the patterns in the book, I thought this would be a perfect one for someone like me who is just learning my crochet stitches.  Making the Puff Stitch seems like fun plus the pattern calls for beads which is another skill I am working on.  Fingers crosses and stay tuned for a future Fiber Arts Friday where I share my finished project.

Another project that uses my yarn is the Barnes Tie.  How cute is this tie? I really like how she has her model wearing it too.  I love it because it can be worn in a casual or dressy way.  Some days you want the handmade accessory but not the bulk of a shawl and this makes a win/win solution.  This pattern calls for Broomstick Lace Crochet.  I totally understand the term and can recognize the stitch but am not ready to make it yet so I shall admire others who can.  One day, one day...

These are only two of the projects in the collection of 17 patterns including sweaters, shawls and purses.  The book not only full of gorgeous patterns and beautiful artwork, it is also full of history.  Denise was inspired by the women of aviation and each project is accompanied with a bit of history about a female pioneer of flight.  She not only has an ebook but a soft cover book will be released soon.

Do you want to learn more?  Then you need to visit her website. and Voie de Vie.

Do you want to win a copy of her ebook?  Of course you do!  Leave a comment here with your Ravelry name, blog address or email so I can notify you.  You will also be put in an additional drawing on Denise's website to win some yarn to go with one of these patterns.  Check out her website and follow her.  She is a talented artist in different mediums and I truly am inspired by her.
