FRIGHTENED BIRDS, By Sherry Sharp
I turn into you~
You cup only my one finger…
Through thick blankets,
Tight~
In the dead-still black of the night,
Is the only time we reach now.
What do we reach for?~
Turn toward?~
And why won’t it live in the light?
What is it that breathes in the corner of the room?
Comes and goes…
But never in sight~
I can’t see it anymore,
Though it’s burning bright…
Right at the foot of our bed, it waits and waits…
I feel it ~
I feel the beauty, the delight ~
of its resurgent living might
Does it come for you? Us?
Or is it mine alone to fight?
Hold more of me~
Reach for all of me…
The years, like frightened birds, now in full flight~
I draw, I paint, I write….
To escape the bite of Winter.
Turn wholly towards me~
Push my hair back from my frantic face…
Say: When there’s nothing…
There will still be us~ By God’s grace…
Say: Hush now…the sins of the day won’t steal the night
Tell me….
Tell me…
And then tell me again~
That it’s all going to be alright
