Just think. It’s not our students’ fault that we adults, are rushing to finish our curriculum, or that our administrators are asking us to work on paperwork, or so on. Let’s just stop and remind ourselves that there are lives, long or short stories behind those little faces, that those little minds and hands can teach us a lot. They are seeing the world from a new and fresh perspective!
There are times that I feel, that I need so much more time to finish the content I “have” to teach. I rush to get through and feel frustrated because they didn’t finish the composition in forty minutes. I forget that my little ones are just that, little people that “are like wet cement, that whatever falls on them makes an impression” H. Ginott. Have you had the chance to stop for just five minutes in your busy day to reflect on what are your students hearing from you? I am trying. But, trust me, every time I read this quote, I question myself on what is the message I am giving to my students? I know I Love my students. I want them to succeed. I do believe in the importance of self-confidence and in the development of love for themselves. But, how do we do this? We, teachers have the power to make their days the happiest by simply smiling at them and by showing that we are there for them and with them. I think of these children, as the people that will create a new society and I just would love to have a more understanding and caring group of people in this world.
I guess that the message I am trying to get across is just that we have the opportunity to love our students. We have the chance to provide them with academic knowledge, to teach them to be disciplined and to make them realize that they are capable of doing many wonderful things. That is why we are teachers! Yes, we can give them our “knowledge” but also because God, life, or the circumstances chose us to be their second parents. What a great gift! Just think of the reduced group of people in the professional world that have the chance to get a note saying “I like learning about snails” or “I love you profesora Vilchez.” How luckier can we get?

Hace dos años aproximadamente recibí un valioso regalo de una amiga muy cercana - ¡gracias Pata!- Es una cita enmarcada de Haim Ginott, de su obra un profesor y un niño. Él fue un maestro y psicólogo que se mudó a los estados Unidos. Desde la primera vez que lo leí, lo he tenido como una gran fuente de inspiración y como una forma de recordarme el por qué elegí ser profesora. Tengo entendido que las obras de Ginott abordaron el tema de la inteligencia emocional. Considero a éste, un aspecto muy importante para mi trabajo. Puedes encontrar la cita aquí.
Ponte a pensar. No es culpa de los niños el que estemos siempre apurados por terminar el contenido de la currícula que tenemos que enseñar, o que nuestros superiores nos pidan cumplir con papeleo, etc. Detengámonos y recordemos que detrás de esos pequeños rostros existen vidas, historias largas o cortas, que esas “pequeñas” mentes y manos nos pueden enseñar un montón. Ellos están empezando a conocer el mundo desde una perspectiva nueva y fresca.
Ha habido muchas veces en las que siento que debo terminar con el contenido que debo enseñar y me apuro por hacerlo. Me frustro porque no terminaron de escribir su composición en cuarentas minutos. Me olvido que mis pequeños son eso, pequeños “que son como el cemento fresco, que cualquier cosa que caiga en ellos se impregnará” H. Ginott. ¿Te has detenido por cinco minutos en tu ocupado día para pensar en qué es lo que tus alumnos están oyendo de ti? Yo, lo estoy intentando. Pero créeme cuando te digo que cada vez que leo esta cita me pregunto ¿cuál es el mensaje que les estoy dando? Sé que los Quiero y que quiero que triunfen en la vida, quiero que tengan confianza y amor propio. Pero, ¿cómo hacemos esto? Nosotros, los educadores tenemos el poder de hacer de sus días los más felices con tan sólo sonreírles y haciéndoles saber que estamos ahí por ellos y con ellos. Yo veo a estos niños como los miembros de una nueva sociedad. Quisiera que este mundo pudiese tener gente más comprensiva y pendiente el uno del otro.
Lo que estoy tratando de expresar mediante este escrito, es que nosotros los profesores tenemos la oportunidad de quererlos. Podemos brindarles conocimiento académico, enseñarles a ser disciplinados y mostrarles que ellos son capaces de hacer muchas cosas maravillosas. ¡Es por esto que somos educadores! Sí, porque podemos dar “conocimiento, pero también porque Dios, la vida o las circunstancias nos eligieron como los segundos padres. ¡Qué gran regalo! Ponte a pensar en el reducido número de personas en el campo profesional que tiene la oportunidad de recibir notitas que dicen “¡me gusta aprender acerca de los caracoles!” o “Te quiero profesora Vilchez” ¿Podemos ser más afortunados?
