FDA denies plastic rice on the market

FDA has definitely refused circulating rumors that there is Plastic Rice on the markets in Ghana.

Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, Delis Darko said while addressing to the media at a press conference in Accra on Friday, rice sample collected on the Ghanaian market suspected to be Plastic Rice proved to be true.

She said we obtained random samples through nationwide market surveillance program. The Food and Drugs Authority stepped further to issue a press statement. Authority requested public to help not only by providing samples of the suspected plastic rice or by informing as to where it was found.

Delis Darko talked about the properties of plastics, explaining the reason of the rice on the market could not possibly be plastic; we subjected all these samples get to the laboratory for laboratory investigation. The laboratory results analysis indicate that all the samples were in fact authentic real rice and not plastic.  She added, plastics having such physical and chemical properties that normally cannot be reconstituted into suitable for eating food.

She further said, plastic rice are unable to absorb water therefore rice could be sticky.

FDA CEO said the textural properties of rice varieties are due to the nature of their starch content.

She added, having the characteristic of starch in rice make rice grains enable to be cooked and come together, stick and allows it to be kneaded into a sensitive sphere that can remove away hard surfaces as showed in the videos you see viral on social media.
