Dog Days are over, You'll be an Architect!

It is exactly 16 days before the architecture licensure examination here in The Philipines. This is the period with doubt, impatience, exhaustion and also excitement. These remaining days albeit short is one of the most crucial moments of the examinee as this is the time wherr emotional stability and emotional quotient is tested.

Board exams are not only the battle of the brains but it is more of the emotion. I had heard several accounts of superbly intelligent people that flopped the exam. There were also stories of people failing due to mental block.

Having experienced the board exam felt like taking a  crash course on maturity 101. Believe or not maturity is one of the biggest factors that  make it or break for an examinee. There were also things that  I didn't do that I wish I had and things that I have done but regretted that I did.

I listed below some of my insights and realizations that I wish I had when I took the examination. I hope these can alleviate or at least create a peace of mind before the examination.

1. SLEEP

2. Don't anymore Study. I can attest to you that 90% of the things you studied during this period will be forgotten. Always remember that the things you studied and focused when you were relaxed stays in your brain longer rather than the rushed ones.

3. Stick to the information you were taught by your instructor or read first hand. I have friends from different Review Centers before and we were taught ideas that contradicts each review center's answer. I advice you to not listen to these discussion because it creates doubt and panic. Firmly believe the things you have studied and taken your time to.

4. Don't focus on studying hard questions that create different answers. Examiners are not fond of giving questionable questions and philosophical ones.

5. STUDY CURRENT EVENTS, I REPEAT, STUDY. These questions pose as contemporary architecture or history questions and they usually take 75% of the 1st exam set.

6. They havent released questions about methods of compensation for a long time, so don't focus much on this item.

7. Study list of suppliers as early as you can. They are a lot and these are usually asked during the second set of the tests.

8. For building technology, familiarize yourself with the images of tools, machines and other things used for construction. In a 150 item exam for BT, they take up 10% of the list of questions.

9. You don't need to memorize all vernacular construction terms, just the easy ones that usually pertain to houses.

10. Estimates in the exam are so basic so don't stress yourself so much.

11. Stop studying atleast a week before the exams. Try to relax as much as you could.

12. Set yourself to sleep and wake up early. Exams start as early as 8am with registration starting at 7am. Proper sleep and a well performing biological clock is very important for the exam. You can't afford to be sluggish during the exam.

13. Do not let others look for your School Assignment. You can't let mistakes be committed on this one, there are stories in the past that a person accidentally went to another school rather than his school assignment and that cost him another year to take the exam

14. Bring highlighters or different colors of pen that can help you organizers your exam papers during the exam. Situational questions in the exam are usually connected to another situational question or they jump to another number. Organizers help you track those questions and shorten your time going back to those.

15. Bring extras. Calculator, pens, pencils, erasers, water, food, Rule 7 and 8, etc. This  is important especially to the Rule 7&8 book, proctors have different protocols for the book, some allow highlights in the books somedont, it is quietunpredictable so to be ready, prepare a clean one and the one you usually use.

16. Most importantly, forget the past and prepare for the future. The exam is done and don't linger on the items you were not confident, always think that you will pass and will take the theoathtaking.

Goodluck guys and Hope to see a new set or Architects that will change our country!

Goodluck!
