Learning How to Learn: 7 Tips To Improve Memory

Having a strong Memory depends on how much you train your brain. Whether you are a student or a professional, you might be interested in reading about these 7 tips to improve memory.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but when it comes to influencing our own Brain, this simply isn’t true. The human brain has the amazing ability to adapt and change, and there are many things you can do in order to improve your memory. Here are just 7 of them which you could find interesting:

Check the Stress

Stress is one of the brain’s worst enemies. Over long periods of time, stress is capable of destroying brain cells and the region of your brain in charge of retrieving old memories. In order to avoid stress, try setting realistic goals and expectations.

Have a Laugh

This connects back to our first point: have a more positive, healthy look on life! Take breaks throughout the day, and have a laugh once in a while. Share your embarrassing moments, and spend time with fun, playful people.

Learning How You Learn

There are many types of learners: visual, auditory, tactile… You just need to learn what’s your type! Once you understand what suits you best, you will be able to improve your memory by basing yourself on the best asset you have.

Associative Memory Techniques

Try remembering things by attaching ideas to them. This is called associative memory: linking multiple ideas to the same notion and making the chance of remembering important concepts even higher. For example: I want to remember that John’s surname is Baker. To do so, I can associate to John the fact that he is great at cooking, or that he likes wearing white shirts.

Get Enough Sleep

This goes without saying: a healthy mind is a mind that has slept well the night before. Try listening to some relaxing music before going to sleep in order to be well awake and improve memory the next day.

Physical Exercise

Don’t skip on workout! Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp, increasing the amount of oxygen it is capable of receiving. It also lowers stress levels and reduces the risk of many diseases that lead to memory loss.

Give Your Brain a Workout

Don’t limit yourself to just a physical workout. This is the brain we’re talking about! It is always willing to learn and challenge itself, and that’s what keeps it healthy and active. Consider taking on new brain boosting activities once in a while: something you are not particularly good at (if not, where’s the challenge) that requires and demands your close attention. Ever tried Sudoku, for example?
