Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, Salman Khan’s Tubelight – 13 things that annoyed us about these movies of 2017

Tags: movie

If a Salman Khan Movie can’t give a festive spirit to the box office this year, then there is something wrong with Bollywood. 2017 has been quite a disappointing year for Bollywood when it comes to box office. The biggest hit of the year till now is Baahubali 2, and that is not a Bollywood movie. Still its dubbed version in Hindi grossed more than every Bollywood movie, a record of sorts. It is quite disappointing since in the first half itself, we have had movies from Shah Rukh Khan (Raees), Hrithik Roshan (Kaabil), Akshay Kumar (Jolly LLB 2) and Salman Khan (Tubelight). All these movies earned decent earnings and even entered the 100 crore club, but the collections left a lot to desired.

The main grouse we have about these movies was that the makers did try to take us for a ride by delivering a thankless plot with a serious lack of novelty. Sure there were some surprises too like Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium and the trilingual The Ghazi Attack, or for the matter the indie A Death In The Gunj. But the big guns didn’t leave a better impact with their offerings, leaving their fans seriously underwhelmed. In this feature, we look at 13 big movies that releasing this yea till now, and one thing that really annoyed us about each of them. Needless to say, SPOILER ALERT!

The Humma Humma song

Movie: OK Jaanu

While we were kinda okay with Karan Johar remaking Tamil movie OK Kanmani, we cannot forgive the fact that they had the audacity to remix Bombay’s iconic Humma Humma song with the added masala of Badshah’s rap.

Losing steam superfast in the second half

Movie: Raees

The teaser of Raees had so much energy, and even the first half of the movie had that. However post-interval, the movie soon lost steam, making it such a generic gangster drama that has nothing new to offer.

PCO Baiting

Movie: Kaabil

Not that Kaabil was a great thriller or so, but Hrithik Roshan’s fantastic performance as the blind man seeking revenge for his dead wife was spot on and save the movie. But the way he uses PCOs in the time of smartphones to carry out his revenge sounds very contrived and convenient.

A terrible climax

Movie: Baahubali 2

Baahubali 2 was a superbly engaging movie from the first scene itself. That is, till the first Baahubali track ended near the climax of the movie, and the focus suddenly shifts to his son, leading to a rush battle scene with terrible fight choreography and bad VFX. So disappointing!

Saif’s here..oh, he is gone!

Movie: Rangoon

Saif Ali Khan’s character in this Vishal Bhardwaj should have been memorable – an egoistic movie director who is good books of British but is not necessarily a bad man. However, the script ignores him for most of its screentime, favouring the lacklustre romance between Kangana and Shahid more.

Stalking zindabad!

Movie: Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Sure, Alia doesn’t give much bhaav to her stalker, in this case Varun Dhawan, for long. But she does fall for him by the end, seeing his good heart. While we know that Varun’s character is not bad, still that’s not enough to say that the movie doesn’t promote stalking.

Too much baashan

Movie: Jolly LLB 2

The first Jolly LLB movie was a pleasantly surprising legal dramedy with a strong climax. For the sequel, they took a bigger star and amplified the drama also higher. But what it resulted in was too much of a baashan-driven climax that could have been toned down a lot!

Mumbai bashing

Movie: Noor

Noor had screwed up her career and life goals all through her negligence. And yet she goes on to blame Mumbai for all the woes. Sure, the city is far from perfect, but it had nothing to do with her plight. So why take your ire on your city, Ms Noor?

Secret agency….selfish stalkers!

Movie: Naam Shabana

Even CIA looks like a bunch of bunnies in front of the secret agency shown in this movie that stalks potential candidates, to the point that it feels really uncomfortable. And they don’t mind if innocent men get killed in the process, while also helping their recruits carry out their personal vendetta.

Jackie Shroff’s hilarious antics

Movie: Sarkar 3

Actually, every scene with Jackie Shroff and his bikini-clad moll who pouts with the fishes looks straight out of a Kanti Shah movie.

Is that you, Mr Gates?

Movie: Half Girlfriend

If this was not a serious scene, it would have looked like something straight out of a Housefull movie. Such a bad case of VFX!

Why is Rajkummar Rao there?

Movie: Raabta

Why did you take a super talented National award winner like Rajkummar Rao, hide him behind layers of prosthetics and then waste him for a couple of scenes?

Playing the man child

Movie: Tubelight

What were the makers thinking when they roped Salman Khan for a role that was originally played by a child in the Hollywood movie? Even though Salman did his best, the actor really looked out of place in a role he was not really comfortable doing. And so were his fans too, going by the lukewarm response!
