Today, Baahubali 2 touched the magical figure of Rs 1,000 crore worldwide. The cast is obviously over the moon. While the box office success is certainly a mammoth reason, the fact that Bahubali has been hailed as benchmark for Indian cinema globally has made them super proud. Bollywood Life spoke to Rana Daggubati, who is being loved by the whole nation for his portrayal of the manipulative and greedy Bhallaladeva in the series. On mentioning the figure of Rs 1,000 crore, Rana laughs out loud. “Hahaha, it is exciting. It is a huge number, ask me,” says the handsome hunk. Clearly, trade publications have had a frenzied time writing down the collections of the films that is shattering records every single day. When we told Rana that since morning it’s all been about box-office stories for us, Rana said, “We want to thank every single person of the press in Mumbai and across the country. They really supported the Film and owned it. They are why we are here today, and they have made it what it is today. The way the media rallied around the film was very encouraging.” (Also Read: Bahubali 2 box office collection day 10: Prabhas and Rana Daggubati makes Rs 300 crore nett. in India)
The obsession with box office numbers is something that has alarmed producers, trade experts and film buffs in recent times. Everyone wants to know how much a film has earned rather than its actual content? Elaborating on the number game, Rana said, “Obviously, the numbers matter a lot. It gives us the belief that we can dream bigger and make bigger films. Five years back when we trying to make this film, people thought we were bonkers, making such an expensive film. Then, we stood by it throughout till the end. It shows that if you are honest enough towards your story and content it works.” Given the kind of films that are going to release in the next few months or should we say years, it is clear that Bahubali 2’s record will not be vanquished soon. But Rana says he is hopeful that India makes many super successful films like Bahubali 2 in the coming years. Internationally, Bahubali 2 competed with the Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2, a mega budget extravganza from the Marvel stable and came third at the global box office list. “Well, I am hoping that many such films will come out of India. Bahubali 2: The Conclusion is a just a stepping stone for all of us to make bigger and bigger films. In India, we have a market for such films,” he opines. The foreign media has showered accolades on the film saying that Bahubali 2 is a sign that the Indian cinema industry is “flexing its muscles”. It has also rated SS Rajamouli as one of the world’s most imaginative story-tellers. “There is a real sense of pride in being part of this film. We feel blessed to be in the movie business and a film like Bahubali tells us we are in the right place at the right time,” says Rana.
There is a lot of buzz about Bahubali 3 in the pipeline? Fans have strong reasons to believe that the franchise can continue. We are sure this is something SS Rajamouli and the actors must have spoken about and contemplated giving the humongous success of the film. “See, the world of Bahubali won’t end. There is the book, we will have a TV series. As of now, only the story of Bahubali 2 has concluded,” says Rana. Will see see him as part of Bahubali 3? “That is something we will all discover together,” he says.
