A Poor man’s somebody/something A person or thing that is similar or can be compared to something or someone else, but is not as good is a poor man’s version. e.g.: “Sparkling white wine is the poor man’s champagne.” “In Two and a half men Walden Schmidt is a poor man’s Charlie Harper.”
