About Bekal Fort

Bekal Fort is the largest, best-preserved fort of Kerala. Located in the Kasargod district of Kerala, it was constructed by Sivappa Naik during the 1650s. He was a ruler belonging to the Dynasty of Ikkeri. But later on, the Fort was conquered by Sultan Hyder Ali. But Tipu Sultan lost it to the British, after he was defeated.

The Fort is in the shape of a huge keyhole. The underground tunnels, sea bastions and the tall observation towers of this Fort are the proof the impact history left on this beautiful monument. The observation towers used to be the abode of huge cannons during the days of Hyder Ali.

The old mosque located in the premises of the Bekal Fort is believed to be developed by Tipu Sultan.

This landscape is of delicate and exquisite quality. The ever-stretching grasslands and the sea view make this place an ideal tourist destination. The Bekal fort is located on a vast 35-acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea.

With a history of more than 300 years, the imposing structure is about 130 feet tall. The immense history makes it a favourite destination for the archaeologists also.
