Transformers: Age of Extinction

I'm pretty late to the party on this Movie. After watching the majority of Transformers: Age of Extinction, I wish I never attended the party. It's not that I don't love explosions. I love explosions. I love them even more when I care about that human/machine who stands to be injured by the explosion.
But, what's happening Michael Bay? I remember The Rock, Bad Boys, and Top Gun! You produced films with some heart. I cared about the damage.
I'm waiting to unleash my empathy, but I can't. These characters snipe more at each other then the enemy (heyyyooooooo!).
Fun screwball comedy banter? Nope. I wish.
More along the lines of, "I'm going to kill you. You like my daughter!" "You're a terrible father."
You're films have transformed (no pun intended (OK. A little pun intended)). Your movies are more than, "everything blows up." They've become "everything-is-cruel."
The cruelty is so omnipresent, it must have been a stylistic choice. I'm just confused. Why? Why would you want a audience to detach from your protagonists, but then photograph the scenes in a way that would suggest you want us to care about their suffering at the hands of invading aliens.
Mike, is this some experiment? Are you testing the audience? How mean can I make these beautiful people before the audience switches off? I've switched off. And, I literally did. I switched off the movie in the last 20 minutes. I was just tired of empty explosions. As far as I know the Tranormers all died. I doubt it, though. I read there will be a Transformers 5 and 6.
I hope those are better. I truly do want to like these movies. Visually, I do like them. My eyes love these movies. I'm just tired of hearing the people in these movies.
Maybe Transformers would work better as a silent film.
