The Meg – It’s Got Bite in RealD 3D – Movie Review

I’ve seen a fair few Shark movies over the years, from Jaws (a Movie that still makes me jump today) to the rather boring 47 Meters Down, so when the trailer first came out for The Meg my interest was sparked and even more when I found out the movie was in RealD 3D.

The Meg takes the shark movie one step further in the world of craziness of the shark movie where the shark is something that is slightly believable, this time we are treated to the mother of all sharks with the distant relative of the shark, the Megladon a prehistoric creature that is found thanks to man’s quest for adventure and knowledge as a scientific team dive down to the pacific’s deepest trench, to see if the layer at the bottom is penetrable.

But all goes terribly wrong as the crew discover The Meg as it attacks the crew of the submersible and they lose all contact with the surface, now there is only one man that can save the team, one man that has the skills to make the journey to the bottom of the sea and that man is Jason Statham!

The Meg vs Statham

Now I have to say that I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Meg ever since I first saw the trailer a while back and at the time I had no idea that the movie was based on a series of books by Steve Alten, with this movie based on the first book, “MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror“, suffice to say I’ll be grabbing some of them to read very soon. Shark movies have become a little stale of the last few years and to be honest they have never thrilled me as much as Jaws, but The Meg certainly adds a whole new twist to the shark movie.

The Meg is a crazy movie if you are going to go in thinking that you are going to see a film that is one that isn’t silly, then you are going to seriously disappointed, you have to go and see the film with a completely open mind and the madness, action, jumps, a few nods to Jaws and of cause Jason Statham doing what he does best, being an all-out action man.

Director Jon Turteltaub has certainly done a good job of bringing The Meg to the big screen and opting to have the film in RealD 3D certainly works very well, there are some great scenes where the use of the 3D gives some real depth (excuse the pun) to the underwater scenes, there is even a point where something comes flying out of the screen towards the audience, it certainly had me moving slightly back in my seat for a brief moment, then cautiously checking to see if anyone else did the same.

The sound in The Meg is also very well done, with all the surround speakers being used for not only the action scenes but also for the atmospheric sounds in the quieter moments to give you the feeling that you are in the scene and surrounded by what’s going on.

There are also many comedic moments in The Meg, during the screening I went to there were lots of people laughing out loud on many occasions throughout the movie, which is great to see while in a cinema, it adds to the fun of going to the cinema and joining in with others rather than watching a film on your own on a TV screen.

I really couldn’t fault the movie for its special effects, sound and craziness, the cast seemed to work well with Jason Statham (Spy, Furious 7) as the hero of the film and including Bingbing Li (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Resident Evil: Retribution), Rainn Wilson (Death of Superman, Super), Ruby Rose (XXX: Return of Xander Cage, John Wick: Chapter 2) and Cliff Curtis (Sunshine, Whale Rider).

The Meg is a fun movie, it’s a film that you can sit back and just enjoy the action and silliness, a proper popcorn movie.
