Why I Love Columbus: Planting My Roots

WILC by Randy Gerber, founder and principal, Gerber LLC

When it came time for me to put on the cap and gown to receive my degree from The Ohio State University, it became clear that I needed to stay right here in Columbus. As a first-generation entrepreneur originally from East Aurora, New York, the awe I felt from the spirit and tenacity of the city more than two decades ago continues to move me today more than ever.

Through founding Gerber Llc, a company providing holistic Business services to first-generation entrepreneurs, I discovered that, much like this city, our services need to continue to evolve – and we’ve done just that. Over the years, Columbus’ characteristics have largely influenced the values and goals that my company embodies. Today, these attributes are even more evident throughout the city:

Welcoming Atmosphere of Success

Coming from Western New York, I had doubts about planting my roots in a new city, let alone building a business where I had so few connections outside of my new alumni network. However, as I entered the business community upon graduation, Columbus welcomed me with open arms and endless opportunities.

The city was – and is – an open door to people looking to lay a foundation and make their mark, even if they’re not a 614 native. The city recognizes that providing opportunities and resources for new business benefits the community at large and provides great dividends to its people. Other large, “sexier” cities that attract business owners, but oftentimes have limited opportunities (in terms of funds and resources) to make a name for themselves. There is an overwhelming amount of support in Columbus to help transplants integrate their lives and businesses within the community.

Innovative Forward Thinking

Columbus’ innovative and thriving business climate has allowed for continued growth and success for both new and existing business owners. This is something I value as a first-generation entrepreneur. The small-business and startup community is one that is ever-growing, stimulating and continuously recognized on a national level. The plethora of business opportunities and thought leaders driving the economy are ever-inspiring.

Passionate People

If I could sum up the sense of community here in Columbus, I would use the words, “passionate” and “innovative.” The people here truly embody the Midwestern spirit, whether it’s the introductions and partnerships formed between individuals and companies or the amount of time and effort invested back into the community. The people here are truly passionate about seeing the city thrive not only now, but into the future.

Ohio State University may be what originally brought me to Columbus, but the welcoming, innovative and passionate climate is what enticed me to stay and plant my roots.
