Sikkim Is Getting Its First Airport: This Is Why You Should Totally Head To This Marvellous Place

Time-starved Millenials love to travel, but usually only to air-connected locations to cut down the journey time as much as possible. If you are one such person, then put Sikkim too in your bucket list as the state is going to have its first airport from Sept. 23.

Home to scenic glaciers, alpine meadows, several Buddhist monasteries and thousands of varieties of wildflowers, Sikkim is an unbelievable wonder on Earth. However, reaching Sikkim was time taking and hence it remained out of our travel goals.

Until now, visiting Sikkim would have meant landing at West Bengal’s Bagdogra Airport, then travelling 124 km uphill for five tedious hours on winding roads to reach its capital, Gangtok. However, this Sikkim’s new airport is going to change the travel scene of the state for good.

Perched between the Himalayan ranges at a height of 4,500 ft, Pakyong airport is a scenic spot in itself and is just 30 km from the capital. This will be country’s 100th functional airport and will be inaugurated by a maiden flight by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Spicejet will be one of the flight services that will start plying from Kolkatta to Pakyong for Rs. 2600, Indian Express reported.

  • Tsmogo Lake and Nathula Pass:

Tugged at 38 km away from Gangtok, Tsmogo Lake is breathtakingly beautiful. Be prepared for the taste of Yak cheese and a bumpy Yak-ride as well. Just 27 km. further is Nathula Pass, a major passageway on the Old Silk Route between India and Tibet.

  • Yuksom:

Hiking-enthusiast should totally head to Yuksom which is filled with natural beauty and uninterrupted trail for trekkers. The trail passes through the unspoiled forests, magnificent rhododendron gardens, and powerful rivers of Khangchendzonga National Park.

  • Zuluk:

The solitude-seeking souls amongst you can opt to stay in this quite and small village located at a high altitude that has a very empowering history due to its connection with the Silk Route. A great place to visit if you want to experience snowfall and to enjoy the magnificent sight of Mount Khangchendzonga.

  • Rumtek and Pemayangtse Monasteries:

Overlooking Gangtok, these Buddhist monasteries is a marvellous place for meditation. Other monasteries that are worth visiting include the Karma Kagyu monastery with its 200-year-old murals, the old Sanga-Choeling monastery and Enchey monastery.

  • Flora and Fauna:

While in Sikkim, you just can’t miss an astounding variety of birds, animals, and flowers. If you like to explore more, you can head to Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary near Ravangla in South Sikkim, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary and Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical Garden.
