– 10 Poetry Contests Open to Canadians –

It can be hard for emerging poets to gain a foothold in the publication community; sometimes the best option is to submit to every Contest you possibly can. In that spirit, we’ve compiled a list of 10 Poetry contests for emerging and established poets alike.

• Aspiring Canadian Poets Contest
  • This year’s details are expected to be posted soon, likely a June deadline. Prize is mentor-ship sessions with an established poet.

• The Magpie Award for Poetry
  • Contest opens March 1st. First Prize will be published plus receive $500 and an additional $50 going to each of two runners up. All entrants receive a digital subscription to Pulp Literature Magazine.

• Arc Poetry Poem of the Year
  • Contest only open until February 15, get your entry in soon! Winner will receive a whopping $5000!

• Room Fiction & Poetry Contest
  • Opening up in April, First and Second prize winners in this Contest will be published in Room Magazine and receive $1000 and $250 respectively.

• CBC Poetry Prize
  • This Contest is also opening up in April. The winner receives $6000 as well as a 10-day residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity! Shortlist finalists also receive $1000 and have their poem published.

• The Walrus Poetry Prize
  • Last year’s deadline was in October so you’ve got some time to prepare for this $4000 dollar prize. Last year was judged by Margaret Atwood so bring your best!

• RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers
  • Alternating between Short Fiction and Poetry (this year Poetry) this contest offers $10000 to the winner and $2500 to two other finalists. Deadline is March 5th, submit soon!

• Winchester Poetry Prize
  • These next couple of prizes are related to poetry festivals in the U.K. but are open to submissions by Canadians (and who wouldn’t want to go to the U.K.?) The next Winchester Festival is in early October so keep a close eye on this one for details!

• Ledbury Poetry Competition
  • The Ledbury Poetry Festival (June 29-July 8) has an annual poetry competition with a cash prize and a course at Ty Nweydd, the national writing centre of Wales. A smaller contest is also open to young writers!

• Dreamers Creative Writing
  • Wait, what? Okay, so this one isn’t technically a contest, but did you know we are now open for submissions? Click the link to find out more and perhaps you’ll find yourself published right here!
