CAPTAIN MARVEL & the Future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe…

I said here recently – and a number of other times – that bringing Carol Danvers (and the Captain Marvel mythology) to the big screen was probably the thing I’ve been most excited for in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years.

This is of course because I’m a big fan of this character and felt that she should’ve been incorporated into the MCU even earlier than this.

But beyond the simple fanboy element to my enthusiasm for Captain Marvel’s cinematic debut, bringing Captain Marvel into the MCU has rich potential in other ways.

For one thing, if we’re not going to be seeing Captain America or Iron Man anymore after the next Avengers movie (which has been heavily implied), then they’ll need other characters to move forward as ‘leader’ figures in the hero pantheon of the MCU.

Carol Danvers would instantly be the obvious figure to take up that mantle, as this is basically her loose role/status in the comic-book source material.

In the contemporary Marvel comic-book universe, Captain Marvel is essentially up there with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and one or two others (Reed Richards, maybe) in terms of being the ‘senior figure’ characters.

Arguably, Danvers’ status in current Marvel lore is at the level Captain America’s was maybe twenty years ago. This was perfectly demonstrated in, for example, the recent Civil War II event last year (reviewed here) in which Danvers and Stark were the principal figureheads.

It makes sense to translate that into the MCU as well.

In that scenario, it could probably be that Captain Marvel (and probably Doctor Strange) would emerge as the primary ‘leader’ figures in the absence of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers. The prevalance of Doctor Strange in Infinity War suggests this shift: throwing Carol Danvers into the mix at this juncture provides good potential for Captain Marvel to quickly even become the primary face of the MCU in the way that Tony Stark has been for the last ten years.

I would be happy with that. I would also like to see T’Challa (Black Panther) emerge as one of those primary leader figures too – but that depends on how America-centric future films turn out to be, given T’Challa’s location being Wakanda.

The overdue arrival of Captain Marvel to the MCU also opens up various new possibilities for storytelling. It would make sense for crossover stories involving Danvers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, for example. Getting to Hala also opens up the cosmic element of the Marvel Universe more and could mean cinematic exploration of the Kree, the Shiar and the Skrulls.

I would absolutely love to see the next big ‘event’ in the MCU after Infinity War be an adaptation of the Secret Invasion storyline. Captain Marvel movies could certainly be a way to open that up. The Avengers animated series from several years ago (‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’) adapted the Secret Invasion storyline to an entire season – and it was superb. That story adapted cinematically could be magnificent.

And plenty more options suggest themselves. I also, for one thing, would love to see Kelly Sue DeConnick (who wrote probably the best Captain Marvel comic-book runs) brought in for a Captain Marvel movie to write a story or to at least be a major consultant.

But I’m just wish-listing now.

The point is that bringing Captain Marvel in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t just finally give us one of the most iconic comic-book heroes on the big screen – it also opens up really good additional possibilities for the MCU and will also probably represent an imminent shake-up of the MCU pantheon.

For one thing, if Stark and Rogers are finished in the MCU after the next Avengers/Infinity-War movie, who is going to ‘lead’ the Avengers? Could it end up  being Carol Danvers?

I can’t think of anyone more appropriate.
