Everybody loves watching Beauty pageants. Who does not like seeing beautiful faces, sexy bodies in skimpy swimsuits, sparkling pieces of jewelry, glamorous gowns, and the ever poised walk of aspiring beauty queens? You would think that such pageants are luxurious. However, you will be surprised about the kind of pageant that costs the most money – chicken pageant.

This may come as a surprise to you but not to those who live in or at least came to visit Kelantan, Malaysia. It is practically a part of their culture for many decades now and it will most likely survive the test of time.

Serama – Chickens with Royal Blood

Just like in any other Beauty Pageant, not everyone who wants to join can be a part of the pageant. It is for special chickens only, specifically Serama chickens. These chickens are extra special because they are naturally petite and because they are practically noble blood. That is because their history shows that they were the favorite pets of Malaysian sultans. Serama chickens, whose name’s root word is “rama” or Thai royalty, are traced back to the King of Thailand who is said to give these chickens to Malaysian sultans as gifts. They are products of the combination of the Japanese bantam and the Malaysian bantam genes.

Chicken beauty pageants are held weekly in different places in Kelantan, Malaysia. It continuously gains popularity that even other countries such as Indonesia, the United States of America, France, Thailand, and Britain also hold their own chicken beauty pageants.

The Fairest of Them All – Criteria for Judging

Of course, just like in any other beauty pageant, there are criteria for judging. Here are what your Serama chicken should possess in order to be crowned as the fairest of them all:

• Beauty of wings
• Beauty of tail
• Beauty of comb
• Beauty of feathers
• Beauty of color
• Style
• Confidence

The beauty is definitely expected since it is a beauty pageant. Style is understandable. However, it is undeniable that many people try to suppress their smiles or try to keep their jaws from hanging open when they see that confidence is a criterion for judging. Well, it works the same with humans in a beauty pageant. Confidence is determined by their composure – how they stand, how they walk, and their posture. They need to show confidence through the way they puff their chests out.

Also, just like with humans, the struggle for perfection comes with a price – the pain of surgery. This is paid in the name of looking their best for a better shot at winning the beauty pageant.

What makes it expensive? The prize is $10,000 You can win up to ten thousand dollars if your chicken wins the beauty pageant. Plus, just like a champion breed, its eggs are significantly more expensive than other Serama chicken’s eggs. It’s in the lineage – the blood of a winner.

The world is in awe at this kind of pageant that a documentary about it even won an award in a school contest.
