Meet India’s First Male And Female Music Composer Duo:Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur

We’ve heard of male Music duos like Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin-Lalit, etc. but this is one unique music duo who have broken all norms of having two males as music composers. You could say they have started a new ‘parampara’ of a male and a female coming together to compose some uniquely melodious music!

Meet Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur who have recently given us some great music in films like Batti Gul Meter Chalu, Toilet Ek Prem Katha etc. In an exclusive conversation with HotFridayTalks the duo shared the story of how they met at a reality show and the music they have created together.

EXCERPT

Parampara firstly how does it feel to be a woman in a filed that is largely dominated by men?

Parampara:“There are a lot of female music composers coming up.
Earlier females did not take up this opportunity, for reasons unknown but now thanks to so many opportunities being open to all, in spite of the gender, these days it’s about whoever is doing a good job gets the job!”

Women often have a different choice when it comes to music, they mostly like soft music that is what I feel, I could be wrong. So how did you guys deal with the different areas of interest if any?

Sachet: “You are right, men normally like the peppy kind of numbers etc.
Parampara like creating the softer kind of music but let me tell you she’s good with both kind of music.”

Parampara: “It’s all about how you are feeling. Sachet is also good at creating soft music, romantic melodies which he understands very well. There is a good balance I must say when we create music together.”

(Sachet agrees and says that they always find a common ground and then agree to it.)

Parampara Thakur feels that there is a good balance when she and Sachet create music together

Who has the last say when/if there is a creative difference?

Parampara: “Sometimes it’s me and sometimes him. It’s actually what works better for the film.”

Sachet: “Till both of us don’t agree on a decision, we don’t do a final take. It’s only once both of us agree jointly on it, we take it forward.”

Tell us about your first song; Suha Ki Train from Toilet Ek Prem Katha

Parampara: “Yes, it is an interesting story. Toilet Ek Prem Katha was being made in 2015 and we happened to meet the director. He gave us a few lines and asked us to compose something.”

Sachet: “ I think he was testing us and trying to see if we could compose something that would fit the kind of film it is. So we composed the music and sent it to him. Then we got a call around 10 pm in the night saying that our track had been finalised for the film and he wanted us to come to Mathura immediately. We immediately packed and left for Delhi by the next flight and proceeded to Mathura from there. Over breakfast, we discussed and finalised the song.”

Sachet according to Parampara is stubborn and does not stop till he gets something right

Were your families happy with your decision to take music as a career?
Parampara: “ Yes my family has always been very supportive.”

Sachet: “Yes mine too were pretty supportive.”

You guys didn’t know each other at all but met at a reality show right?

Sachet: “True I was the finalist for the show and she was the female winner. So after the show, Mika paaji had organised a party for all of us participants along with our family. We sang there and met up and just had a good time.”

Parampara: “We met again and then decided that we should go to Mumbai. There were two other friends so all four of us decided to come to Mumbai and try something.”

Sachet: ”Yes I was working in Lucknow, I was teaching music, perform at different places etc. so it was a risk I knew I was taking because I was making good enough money there too. It was a tough decision but I think it has been worth it.”

You guys are great singers too, will you always be open to singing as well as composing for a film?

Sachet: “It all depends on the director, we definitely give options as that’s our job but then one needs to see how well it fits in the film.”

Parampara: “True, it all depends on what voice is suited for the song, according to the director, us and the film. If the director feels it fits the film then yes we are ready to sing or else we just compose and get someone else who fits the film’s requirements to sing.”

Has it been a struggle for you or has it been easy?

Parampara: “Yes it has been a struggle to get where we have. We believed that if not today, then tomorrow and if not tomorrow then day after, or then after a year, something would definitely come to us.”

Sachet: “What you see is different from what goes on behind. We had no filmy connections but we believed in ourselves and in our talent. If you are confident about yourself then things will happen if not immediately but sooner or later.”

Who has been your inspiration?

Parampara: “My father has been performing on stage for years, so I have been watching the way he performs, the way he tackles the audience etc. Both my parents have been a great inspiration.”

Sachet: “No one in my family sings, I was a bathroom singer when I was younger and since I lived in a joint family, I didn’t have much support. My parents especially my father supported me a lot and still does. He used to bring me to Mumbai to see the reality shows etc. so that I learn.”

Parampara: “ The best thing about Sachet is that he’s very ‘ziddhi'”
(stubborn). He keeps trying and trying till he succeeds.”

What are your plans for the future?

Parampara: “We want to make songs that are melodious that people would enjoy and not just dance to it and forget about it.”

Sachet: “We don’t keep music banks, we make music according to the film, we see where the film is based and then create according to that. So we would love to do more films with more directors and do good work that people will remember.”

This talented duo has created quite a buzz in the Bollywood music scene and they are on their way to creating more. Team HotFridayTalks wishes them all the best!
